10 Video Game Franchises That Have Been Overused | Game Rant

Companies love it when a game of theirs becomes popular. Why wouldn’t they? After all, game developers spend countless amounts of time perfecting their works of art to make the public happy. Some games, however, have become so popular that they make sequel after sequel until the franchise is as dry as a bone.

Nothing good can come from creating the same game each year, but companies still do it to make a quick buck. It’s easy to say though that some game franchises should just end already.

10 Call Of Duty

Call of Duty first came out in 2003. Since then it has spawned more than 20 different games branching across consoles, phones, and handhelds. A new game Call of Duty game has come out every year for a long time and it might be time to stop. Each game is boiled down to point and shoot with each one offering a war story. Black ops was one of the best, but it is now on its fifth game. Even the Modern Warfare series stopped at 3.

9 Tetris

How many times can Tetris be remade? The answer: about 70. That is a lot coming from a franchise that started off with the simple concept of stacking blocks. Tetris has been around since 1984 and has since sold well over 500 million copies. That doesn’t even include all the sales of remakes. Minecraft has come close to beating Tetris, well closer than any other franchise. Eventually, the final block will fall, but it’s hard to imagine that will be any time soon.

8 The Legend Of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda franchise is one of the most beloved franchises in history. That is no surprise considering the love that many Nintendo franchises have gotten over the years, but is it time for the hero’s reincarnation cycle to end? After all, The Legend of Zelda has been around for over 30 years and Link must be tired of defeating Ganon. At the very least, Nintendo could destroy the Master Sword and make Link work harder.

7 Resident Evil

Horror games are great and few games have beaten out the zombie-filled fear of Resident Evil. This game series became so popular that an entire movie franchise spawned from it. Even now, fans are waiting on the next main series game, Resident Evil 8.

In total, the franchise has 32 games so far and that number will probably climb much higher before it stops– but every zombie needs to die at some point. Can’t it be this one’s time?

6 Bomberman

Bomberman has a surprising number of games. By our count, there are over 45. That is an astounding number of titles. What’s more astounding was the series’ revival when Super Bomberman R was released in 2017. The franchise started back in 1983 and is one of the few games older than Tetris. With that in mind, it might be time for this character to retire.

5 Pokémon

Pokémon has been a staple of many kid’s lives and adult’s lives. The franchise has been around for over two decades, but fans can tell it isn’t as strong as it used to be. What started with 151 Pokémon to catch has risen to over 800! There are 33 Pokémon games if you don’t include the countless number of spinoffs. It has gotten to the point where new generations of Pokémon don’t look half as good as the old ones and Galarian editions have made it worse. At some point, this franchise needs to think of ending it before it gets even more out of hand.

4 Final Fantasy

There are over 70 Final Fantasy games and new ones are still being planned. That is a lot of hard work and dedication to games that typically take over 30 hours to beat. The first Final Fantasy came out over 25 years ago in 1987 and has since spawned tons of main series and spin-off titles. Some of these games are even considered to be the best ever created and fans have entire collections of merchandise. All this will need to come to an end eventually. Who knows when that will be, though.

3 Mega Man

Fun fact: There are over 100 Mega-Man games. That’s right, Mega-Man comes close only to Mario who has 120. This titan of a game series has been around since 1987. It’s hard to imagine that there are that many games out there featuring Mega-Man, but then again, he has become an extremely beloved character over the years.

These games will forever be a shining resemblance of the dedication some companies have to their characters.

2 Mario

Mario games have been coming out since 1985. The red and blue-clad plumber is 35 years old and Nintendo doesn’t seem like they will be putting him to bed any time soon. Sure, his games vary and have included more spin-offs than any other franchise out there, but he has got to stop at some point, right? Maybe all those mushrooms he eats are what keeps him kicking after all these years.

1 Sonic

Sonic the Hedgehog has been around almost as long as his plumber rival with his first game releasing in 1991. The blue hedgehog has been around well past his expected lifespan, but that time might work out differently for an animal who can move at supersonic speeds. Time has to catch up with Sonic eventually though. After all, he has received his fair share of both criticism and love over the years across over 50 games. At this point, the speed demon might need to come to a screeching halt.
