This month celebrates the one year anniversary of the debut of The Outer Worlds. The first person shooter RPG has held favorable reviews from players and critics alike, with a sequel presumably underway. Before the sequel, though, The Outer Worlds has announced two different DLCs to add to its original gameplay.
Peril on Gorgon was the first of the DLCs to be announced and released, and players now know the second DLC is titled Murder on Eridanos. There’s been some speculation about what the second DLC will add to the game, and how these additions could affect a future sequel. Though it is set to release sometime in 2021, players don’t know much else about the second DLC.
The Outer Worlds was originally announced at The Game Awards in 2018, but had been in development since 2016. The game launched for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox One in October of 2019, with an eventual Nintendo Switch release in June of 2020. The game’s first DLC, Peril on Gorgon, was initially announced in July 2020 and released in September of the same year. Players have had access to this additional content for a little over a month now, and have found it to be an enjoyable return to the game. When purchasing Peril on Gorgon, players have the option to pre-order Murder on Eridanos in an Expansion Season Pass as well.
While the Season Pass states the second DLC will release in 2021, it’s understandable for fans to speculate about the exact date the Murder on Eridanos DLC will become available to play. The Outer Worlds is great for re-playability and changing the outcome of different situations to see what will happen and Peril on Gorgon added new fun to the game, but players want to know when they’ll be able to run around on Eridanos, a planet currently locked in-game.
Judging by the length of time between the release of the original game and Peril on Gorgon, it’s not hard to guess that Murder on Eridanos may not release until closer to the end of 2021. Peril on Gorgon hasn’t even launched for the Nintendo Switch yet, not to mention how The Outer Worlds’ own Switch release was pushed back because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It took almost a year for players to receive the first DLC for The Outer Worlds, and it’s unclear how much of that time could be because of unforeseen circumstances with the pandemic. Factoring in that the Nintendo Switch still doesn’t have access to Peril on Gorgon, it’s not a drastic conclusion to think Murder on Eridanos is further away than previously anticipated.
However, it’s also possible that production and finishing touches for the second DLC may not take as long as a full year. Living within the COVID-19 pandemic brought on a lot of learning curves, especially for the gaming industry, but many companies have found new ways to work during this time. It’s entirely possible that Obsidian Entertainment has also found their footing and learned to operate under this new normal, leading to Murder on Eridanos releasing in sooner than a year’s time.
As far as predictions go, Murder on Eridanos could release anywhere from six months to a year from now depending on how far along in production it is. However, to err on the side of caution, it’s fair for players to assume it’ll take a longer amount of time to get the DLC ready for release sometime in 2021. In the meantime, fans can always dive back into Halcyon with Peril on Gorgon.
The Outer Worlds is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
