Nintendo has been teaming up with Koei Tecmo to make games based on popular Nintendo franchises with gameplay similar to Dynasty Warriors. Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors, the two previous games that brought the companies together, were successful enough for them to collaborate a third time.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity brings players back to the kingdom of Hyrule and uncovers the events that led to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. With the game releasing soon, now is a great time for fans to play similar games to the upcoming title, as well as some of the most iconic games in the franchise.
10 The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is the first chronological game in the series. Fans that care about the lore of the legend and the history of Hyrule will not want to miss out on the game where Link’s adventures began. It follows the wielder of the Triforce of Courage on a quest to defeat Demise, which hints at Ganon’s origins and results in the creation of the Master Sword. If fans want to experience the events leading up to Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity before the game releases, this is the best place to start.
9 NieR: Automata
Due to the original NieR game getting a remaster next year, now is a good time to get into the series. NieR: Automata is a game in which humanity is trying to reclaim Earth after fleeing from an alien invasion that resulted in machines taking people’s places. In order to fight against the machines, the survivors of Earth, YoRHa, created androids. 2B and 9S are two of the androids that return to Earth to battle against the machines and anyone else that stands in their way. But what they find on Earth may not be what they expected…
8 The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Considered to be one of the greatest installments in the franchise, this game follows Link on a journey to save his little sister, Aryll, as he travels across The Great Sea. He meets the King of Red Lions along the way, who becomes Link’s companion and vessel. In order to rescue Aryll, Link must find the Hero of Time’s Master Sword and searches for the three Pearls of the Goddesses in order to do so. The game was critically acclaimed and considered by many to be one of the best games on the GameCube.
7 Bayonetta
Though the series is now published by Nintendo, the original game was actually published by Sega. The original game follows a witch named Bayonetta who has to face people from her past, which she has lost all memory of. Throughout the game, she learns about her dark past and battles against Balder, the final member of the Lumen Sages.
Though Nintendo and Sega published this series, it is actually much darker than most of their other titles and is intended for mature audiences. The game was also developed by PlatinumGames, the same developer as NieR: Automata.
6 Persona 5 Scramble
Persona 5 is one of the most popular RPGs in recent years and this title serves as a sequel to Atlus’ game. This installment of the franchise, like Age of Calamity, was worked on by Koei Tecmo and is a crossover between Persona and Dynasty Warriors. As of right now, the game has only released in Japan on the Switch and PlayStation 4, but a worldwide release has been confirmed. Persona 5 has had a lot going for it since its initial release with spin-offs such as this one, as well as Persona 5 Royal and Persona 5: Dancing In Starlight, bringing in a lot of new fans to the franchise.
5 Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana tells the story of one of Adol’s newest quests. After a shipwreck, he, Dogi, and everyone else on the Lombardia end up on the Isle of Seiren. Adol joins Laxia and Sahad to find other passengers of the Lombardia while Dogi helps them turn the island into a place they can live at until they all join each other and find a way off the island. Throughout his adventure, Adol finds out secrets of the Isle of Seiren and encounters a mysterious girl named Dana. Though most Ys games have not had the same popularity as other games in the genre, this installment became one of the most popular from the series and is a great introduction for newcomers.
4 Attack On Titan
Another crossover between a popular series and Koei Tecmo is the Attack On Titan video game. Based on the critically acclaimed anime, the story follows a boy named Eren Yeager, and his friends, as they join the Survey Corps and defeat titans. Players can also control other beloved characters of the series including Mikasa, Armin, and Levi. The game covers the first season of the anime, with a sequel titled Attack On Titan 2 covering both the first and second seasons in the eyes of an original character.
3 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Another critically acclaimed game in the series is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The game follows Link, the only kid in Kokiri Forest to not have a fairy. After finally getting one, he goes on a quest through time to save Princess Zelda and defeat Ganon.
Ocarina of Time was the first 3D game in the franchise and was revolutionary, with many games replicating its mechanics to this day. It also serves as one of the most important titles as it is where the three timelines began depending on what happens to Link at the end of this installment.
2 Kingdom Hearts III
Kingdom Hearts III concluded the story of the Dark Seeker Saga, which the series had been telling since the first game’s release. Sora and his friends prepare for their final battle against Xehanort and Organization XIII as they go through worlds based on Disney and Pixar films such as Toy Story, Frozen, and Pirates of the Caribbean. Unlike most of the games in the series that released after Kingdom Hearts II, this title brought back the hack and slash gameplay. Though it was originally considered by most as inferior compared to Kingdom Hearts II, the DLC and updates have changed fans’ minds.
1 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
If there is any game to play before Age of Calamity releases, it is none other than Breath of the Wild. Redefining what most consider a Zelda game to be, this is another game in the series that revolutionized gaming. Link wakes up after 100 years of sleep and players can decide to do anything they want to from the moment they start playing. Whether they want to explore Hyrule, follow the storyline, or defeat the final boss right away, players can do whatever they put their mind to in this title. Age of Calamity is a prequel to this game so it is best to play this before the next installment releases.
