Sony’s PlayStation was released worldwide in 1995, at a time when 3D games were just in their baby form. So it is fair to assume that the original PlayStation had a huge hand in the evolution of games we love today. From racing games to RPGs, PS1 gave every genre a brand-new dimension and a lot more depth. This is the reason the console was sold to consumers around the world.
From design aesthetics to controller shape, everything was pretty much on point. There were many RPG games on the console, that were totally worth playing despite the overall length. However, compared to now, there was no set standard for the average longevity of a game. Hence, game lengths were all over the place, ranging from a few hours to a couple of hundred hours.
10 Vagrant Story (Short)
Vagrant Story was published by Square Electronic Arts, a company that was merged with Enix to from the Square Enix we know today. Seeing how the game was launching near the end of PS1’s lifespan, expectations were high. And it is fair to assume that the game proved to be worth waiting for. This game was everything it set out to be, and that was something that went in its favor. However, its 23 hours length was a bit too short for a lot of fans.
9 Xenogears (Long)
It was 1998 when Xenogears made its way to the PlayStation. The game was made by Squaresoft, the game development team that created Vagrant Story. This is why it’s surprising that the previous entry was merely 20 hours while their 1998’s title Xenogears was over eighty hours long. The game is a traditional RPG that uses the Active Time Battle system with a couple of new features. Therefore, the reception of the game was pretty positive.
8 Suikoden (Short)
By 1995, Konami was pretty famous for creating games as well. This is why when they released their role-play title Suikoden, many fans were excited. The game is a single-player role-playing title, with traditional gameplay elements of the time. The game allows players to explore the world by talking to characters and completing tasks. The game was pretty popular for the time, with one minor issue being its overall length. Suikoden is only 20 hours long, which is pretty short for an RPG.
7 Grandia (Long)
Grandia is the result of the collaboration between SCE, Ubisoft, and Gungho. This is why the game is pretty much a grand experience, with an average playtime of eighty-five hours. The game received shockingly high ratings by everyone, ranging between 9’s and 10s, and was recently released on Windows and Nintendo Switch.
The game is a hybrid of 3D environments and 2D characters, which works pretty well for the time.
6 Koudelka (Short)
There are not many horror-RPGs around, except a few and Koudelka is one of them. The game was launched worldwide in 2000, a time when PS2 was quickly gaining popularity. This could be part of the reason why a game such as Koudelka often goes unnoticed. Another reason could be the overall length of the game, cause it is barely twelve and a half hours long role-playing title. Nonetheless, it is certainly one of the games that should’ve been lengthier. Especially because of such a unique approach.
5 Final Fantasy VIII (Long)
Everybody who is a fan of the Final Fantasy series knows that the games are absolutely bulky. The same is true of the eighth main title in the series, Final Fantasy VIII. Firstly, the game is pretty good, receiving a plethora of positive reviews from fans and critics. But it also adds some subtle improvements to the seventh game in the series, making it an overall worthy play experience. However, sometimes the game just feels a bit too much, especially considering its ninety hours long playtime.
4 Parasite Eve (Short)
Let us get into the domain of action-RPGs and talk about Parasite Eve. The game was created by the people at Square, this is why it’s obvious that it was going to be a lengthy big RPG experience. However, the game falls flat at the playtime, ranging close to nine hours of overall playtime.
The length was one reason why the game wasn’t received very well by the community, gaining mixed reviews from critics and fans alike. However, it is still a pretty good game, if someone wants to play a retro title.
3 Final Fantasy Tactics (Long)
Tactical role-playing games are usually pretty lengthy and the same can be said for Final Fantasy Tactics. With a completely different gameplay style compared to other titles, Final Fantasy Tactics managed to grab the best scores it could for the time. The game is pretty much perfect for the time, but the overall length is an overkill. The game wants players to invest an average of 96 hours to complete.
2 Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night (Short)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is one of the best PlayStation games ever made. The popularity can be noticed by seeing the number of people that still play this game from to time. This is easily one of the best Castlevania titles of all time. The game is a mix of Metroidvania and action role-playing, and hence it is a pretty difficult game. However, despite that, the overall play length of this title is only eight hours and fifty minutes. Making is one of the shortest RPGs on PS1.
1 Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (Long)
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment is the sequel to the Innocent Sin and the third main game in the series. The game was released worldwide in December 2000 and was received pretty well by the fans. It is set a few months after the ending of the second game, expanding the world and story of the original. And even though the game is superseded by sequels such as Persona 4 Golden, there’s one thing that not many Persona games beat this one at and that is the length. The game is over 107 hours long.
