Treyarch has released a trailer detailing a brand new mode featured in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The Fireteam: Dirty Bomb mode will pit 10 teams of four players against each other in objective-based matches on large maps. The game mode was announced during the Black Ops Cold War multiplayer reveal, but now more details have been revealed.
The four-player teams may draw inspiration from Call of Duty: Warzone, but the game mode is scaled down to 40 players on one map. According to Treyarch, Fireteam: Dirty Bomb mode will introduced two large maps, but no further details have been shared. In order to win, teams must collect uranium deposits and insert their found uranium in “Dirty Bombs” around the map. When the bombs are primed with uranium, they will detonate, and accrue points.
A bomb detonating also causes radiation to spawn in large areas of the map. Players in these hazardous areas will experience radiation sickness, which affects health regeneration, perk benefits, movement, and more as the game progresses. With areas being affected by radiations, players will have to strategically navigate to find uranium and bombs.
Vehicles will also play a prominent role in the mode, giving players the ability to travel quickly and utilize vehicle weapons. Based on the trailer, vehicles such as buggies, motorcycles, tanks, and helicopters will be scattered throughout the map for use. Black Ops Cold War has vehicles in most multiplayer game modes, so players will be able to drive or pilot many different Cold War-era vehicles.
Fireteam: Dirty Bomb will unique spawn system, which seemingly combines Warzone parachuting and Modern Warfare Ground War spawning. At the start of the match, players will parachute down, but upon dying, players have a choice of how to respawn. Players can either spawn on a teammate not in combat, spawn directly in a vehicle a teammate is driving, or parachute back down. The system will give players freedom to choose where to go, and enemies will have to keep track of every player in the four-person squad.
Fireteam: Dirty Bomb mode will be available to try on the second weekend of the Black Ops Cold War beta, which starts for early access players on October 15 and for everyone else October 17. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will also feature more Fireteam modes, but those have not been revealed.
According to Studio Design Director David Vonderhaar, “Across every Fireteam mission and mode, you’ll discover some of the most imaginative game loops we’ve ever designed. The Fireteam format allows us to emphasize teamwork and reward creativity, and it allows you to do things you’ve never done in Black Ops Multiplayer before.” The Fireteam format refers to the 40 person mode with 10 teams of four, so more objectives and variants are expected.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War launches November 13 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
