Some unexpected games have been sweeping over Twitch lately. First Fall Guys, then Among Us, and now Phasmophobia. It may look like just another horror game to many, but as the latest Twitch sensation, Phasmophobia needs some explanation.
The main conceit of Phasmophobia is that the players are ghost hunters. They do not seek ghosts to destroy them, just to document where and what they are. It’s a dangerous job, as the players have limited equipment to find and catalogue the ghosts. Communication, patience, and proper preparation are key, although the first of two of these three also aid the ghosts somewhat. Here is a guide to setting up the video camera, one of the fist skills to master in Phasmophobia.
Unlike other items that need to be purchased from the shop, like the essential Thermometer, the camera is in the van from the start. Players can only carry three items at a time unless they’re playing in VR, which allows for four items. Designate someone to lug the camera around, then start searching the location.
Just because players know there’s a ghost to be hunted, that doesn’t mean it’s easy to find. Players can encounter many different types of ghosts in Phasmophobia, and each one prefers a different space. Hunting them requires finding clues like a high reading on the EMF meter, freezing temperatures, and strange writing. Finding a concentration of these indicates a good location to set up the camera to see the ghost.
As mentioned before, the camera is one of the most vital tools in the game. Catching a ghost in Phasmophobia requires players to actually see the ghost, and that means most of them observing from a distance. To this end, it’s important to turn on the camera first (it must be turned on before placement). While carrying it, right click or use right trigger on a controller to turn the camera on (the red light will turn green).
Placing the camera isn’t too tough, but it requires a good eye for setup. The goal is to get as wide a view of the room as possible, so a corner spot or high table is best. The camera can be rotated by left clicking to ensure it faces the right way, then placed with F or the controller’s left trigger. Once that’s done, have one person be the bait to lure out the ghost and someone else use the crucifix nearby in case things go south.
Phasmophobia is in Early Access on PC.
