While the PlayStation 5 has been the topic of lots of discussion in recent weeks, one of the most talked about aspects of the console has been its size. The massive, unique design of the console was chosen for one core reason. according to the Mechanical and Thermal Design Engineer of the PS5.
After complaints about the loudness of the PlayStation 4 fan, Sony claims to have focused on creating a quieter system with the PS5. According to early reports, Sony kept its promise by making the PS5 run almost silently. The reason behind this comes down to the same reason why the console is so large: The PlayStation 5’s cooling fan.
Seen in the lengthy PS5 teardown video uploaded last week, where the inner workings of the console are shown to the public, the massive fan is the primary reason behind the console’s design. In an interview with Japanese website Nikkei Xtech, Mechanical Engineer Yasuhiro Ootori, the same man from the teardown video, discussed the fan size. According to the engineer, the thickness of the console was specifically determined to accommodate the PS5’s fan.
The goal of the double-sided fan is to cool both sides of the console, and the component is 45mm thick. Ootori mentions that two smaller fans were also considered to help decrease the size of the console, however it would have been harder to work with and heavily increase the cost of the console. With the relatively low cost of the PlayStation 5 being part of the reason Sony has high expectations for PS5 sales, it seems like the larger but more cost-effective design was a smart move.
With clever engineering supposedly leading to success with creating a quiet PS5, it is Sony’s job to ensure that the hardware is properly supported. The company has been implementing quality-of-life changes ahead of the console’s launch, with a simplified PSN-based login system for Sony accounts recently put in place. A new website was also created for the PlayStation Store in an attempt to simplify the shopping experience for PlayStation users.
With a large, but quieter console on the way, gamers should be satisfied with the PS5 so long as they can find the space to store it. Next-gen dust catchers for the PS5 could help keep the console clean as well, so seems Sony is attempting to address every major complaint about their previous console’s design.
The PlayStation 5 will launch on November 12 in select regions, and will launch everywhere else on November 19.
