Though many fans know of Marvel’s super heroes from their outings in theaters, there are other methods of viewing favorite characters and storylines. Rather than everyone focusing on the company’s appearances on the big screen, attention should be directed at the recent video games featuring fans’ favorite super heroes.
One of the most highly anticipated games releasing this year is Spider-Man: Miles Morales. This upcoming title is a sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man, which is considered to be one of the PlayStation 4’s best exclusives. While Spider-Man fans wait for the new game to come out, there are many other games involving popular super hero franchises that they can play.
10 Marvel’s Avengers
One of Square Enix’s biggest titles this year is Marvel’s Avengers. After the group disbands as a result of a terrorist attack that transformed civilians into Inhumans as well as a large part of San Francisco facing destruction, they are brought back together again in order to prove their innocence. Players experience the story through some of Marvel’s most popular characters including Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, Kamala Khan, and Black Widow, with more characters coming as DLC. Players can also join up to three of their friends in saving the world.
9 Spider-Man 2
Based on one of Marvel’s best films, Spider-Man 2 follows the movie, allowing fans to control the web slinger in one of his greatest adventures. The game also includes moments that were not in the movie. Besides Doctor Octopus, Spider-Man must also face some of his other enemies, such as Rhino and Mysterio. The game could be played on just about every gaming device that was relevant at the time, making it one of the most inclusive games on this list.
8 Horizon Zero Dawn
Another PlayStation exclusive that is the first in a brand new series similar to Spider-Man is Horizon Zero Dawn. Players control a woman named Aloy as she travels through a futuristic open-world inhabited by machines. After joining the Nora tribe, her world turns upside down as cultists attack, leading her to learn the truth of her world. Many fans consider it to be one of the PS4’s greatest titles and are highly anticipating the sequel, Horizon Forbidden West.
7 Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order
Developed by Koei Tecmo, and released on the Nintendo Switch, this is the third game in the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series. Players do not need to play the previous titles as this is a stand-alone game.
Even though it is similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe films due to Thanos going after the Infinity Stones and the Avengers needing to stop him, the details of this installment are quite different than Infinity War and Endgame. Players are able to play with characters from the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and more, making this one of the greatest crossovers in the franchise.
6 Fortnite
Fortnite is one of the greatest battle royale games out there and has taken the world by storm. The game is known for its many crossovers and has teamed up with Marvel this season so that players can use superpowers to take down characters such as Doctor Doom, Iron Man, and Wolverine. The game has also replaced some of their locations with new ones based on the comics. Though Marvel is only a heavy focus for the game this season, the two companies have collaborated in the past and this probably will not be the last time.
5 Lego Marvel Super Heroes
LEGO has been known for teaming up with many popular franchises, such as Harry Potter, Star Wars, and The Lord of the Rings to make video games. They have joined forces Marvel several times, with the first one being Lego Marvel Super Heroes. Doctor Doom and the game’s heroes are both searching for the Cosmic Bricks. Doom wants them in order to defeat Galactus and take over the world while the heroes need to stop both villains. There are over 100 characters for fans to play as and the game had both a spin-off, Lego Marvel’s Avengers, and a sequel, Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2.
4 Marvel’s Iron Man VR
A game that released earlier this year but did not receive as much attention as a lot of other Marvel games is Iron Man VR. It is a shooter in which players control Iron Man using the PlayStation VR and PlayStation Move controllers.
The story centers around Tony Stark fighting against Ghost, who seeks revenge against him for the death of a man named Tim Shung who was murdered due to the weapons Tony had made prior to becoming Iron Man. As he learns about his past and the enemies he didn’t know he created, Iron Man becomes even more of the hero that he had set out to be.
3 Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite
Another company that Marvel has assembled with is Capcom in their series Marvel vs Capcom. The most recent installment is Infinite, which released back in 2017. After Ultron and Sigma join forces, their universes must team up again to help each other find the Infinity Stones. Thanos tells them the stones’ locations and the group divides into smaller teams that lead to some very interesting interactions that fans of both franchises would not expect anywhere else. Besides some of Marvel’s most notable heroes and villains, players can also control characters from Mega Man, Street Fighter, Resident Evil, and more.
2 Infamous Second Son
Like Horizon Zero Dawn, Infamous Second Son also has nothing to do with Marvel but was a well received title with gameplay similar to the upcoming release. Second Son is the third installment in the series and features an open-world where players control Delsin Rowe, who has super powers. However, it is up to the players to decide whether they want Delsin to be a hero or a villain. The game is considered by many to be one of the greatest PS4 exclusives.
1 Marvel’s Spider-Man
Out of all the games on this list, this is the most important to play. Spider-Man: Miles Morales continues the story of Marvel’s Spider-Man and takes place in the same universe. In this game, Peter Pan had to fight against the Sinister Six. Miles and Mary Jane were also playable, and the upcoming game expands on Miles’ story from this one. A remaster of Marvel’s Spider-Man will even release along Miles Morales on the PS5 for those that haven’t played it yet or want to see how good one of the PS4’s best exclusives looks on its successor.
