Experienced Dark Souls Modders Creating Fanmade Sequel

Dark Souls is perhaps one of the most important games made in the last decade. It has resulted in a whole slew of great Souls-like games along with a major impact on the industry as a whole.

It goes without saying that Dark Souls has fans, but that doesn’t do justice to the level of dedication players put into this game. Players have beaten the game at super speed, with mods, even with Rock Band controllers. The most dedicated players know Dark Souls inside and out, right down to its core. So some of them have decided to completely remix the game they know so well.

Modders and mods are nothing new when it comes to Dark Souls. For the most part, this usually takes the form of a small gameplay or cosmetic tweak. Some bring in characters from other games, while one mod for Dark Souls 3 gives players guns. This is something different though: several experienced Dark Souls modders are coming together to create a brand new game. The game is being billed as a fanmade, direct sequel to Dark Souls, ignoring the actual sequels to focus, presumably, on events immediately following the first game.

The fan sequel, which is currently titled Nightfall, will not have any new assets in it. Everything will come from the original Dark Souls, but remixed in such a way as to be completely new. There will be some new things though, including lore. This will apparently include new spoken voicelines for new NPCs (who will presumably look a lot like old NPCs). Considering there are a lot of details players miss in Dark Souls, it’s a safe bet they will have to do some digging to understand the new fan lore.

Each of the modders is experienced with the base Dark Souls as well, having previous mods under their belts. Of special note is Grimrukh, who has created a previous Dark Souls mod called Daughters of Ash. This mod included remixes of many enemies, including new bosses mostly based off those players loved (not hated) from Dark Souls.

There is no release date yet, which makes sense. A mod of this size will require a lot of work, and while it’s unknown if there will be a Dark Souls 4, it’s nice to know there are still people dedicated to making more Dark Souls, even if the developer never picks up the torch again.
