Mortal Kombat 11 Adding Mileena is a Shock, But Speaks Volumes About NRS

With the release of its Kombat Pack 2 and Ultimate edition in November, it seems that Mortal Kombat 11 is coming to the end of its road. It’s unknown for certain what NetherRealm Studios has planned next, but the very title of Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate implies the end of DLC. However, if so, it’s clear that MK11 is ending on a high note.

Mortal Kombat 11‘s DLC run has, simply put, been fantastic. The first Kombat Pack added Shang Tsung, Nightwolf, Terminator T-800, Sindel, Joker, and Spawn. There was some controversy of Sindel’s background, a few other odds and ends there with Joker’s appearance, but each character felt worth the price tag in terms of gameplay. Spawn served as an amazing endcap, which set the following characters up on a big pedestal. Despite Spawn being hard to top, MK11 Aftermath came in with Sheeva, Fujin, and RoboCop. These characters feel like worthwhile successors, and clearly, it didn’t end there.

With Kombat Pack 2, Mortal Kombat 11 is adding Mileena, Rain, and Rambo. Each of these characters are welcome in one way or another, with Rambo fitting into the action hero-oriented DLC characters, but Mileena is perhaps the most surprising of all. It’s hard to imagine, but Boon effectively added his favorite trolling subject to the game, seemingly based on fan demand.

Ever since April 2019, Boon has been trolling Mortal Kombat 11 fans about Mileena’s inclusion. The “outrage” started just before the game’s release, with there being several major moments ever since where Boon would bring Mileena up. There’s been some pretty major teases and trolls, some minor, but it would be hard to venture how often it happened because of how often it came up. Even Terminator has an animation that many Mileena fans felt like were directed at them.

Boon has a clear history of trolling and teasing fans, and while some were genuinely unhappy about Mileena being excluded, it has always been done in a light-hearted, playful way. Nonetheless, because of the story thus far in the Mortal Kombat universe, she seemed like an unlikely inclusion. She dies in Mortal Kombat X, an actually permanent-seeming death, after all. And clearly, Boon had some fun. In other words, of all the characters could have been on Kombat Pack 2, Mileena seemed least likely. What may have happened, which has yet to be clarified, is that the sheer fan demand for Mileena is the reason for her inclusion. Games like Skate 4 (or whatever it is exactly) have been announced as a result of fans online, with memes often at the ready, and this feels very similar.

The original Kombat Pack 1 had six characters, with this quantity being mostly delivered with quality. Since there are only three characters this time around, the question becomes whether or not Mileena, Rambo, and Rain can live up to the same expectations that KP1 and Aftermath established. Typically, in such a scenario, it seems best to err to the side of caution and temper expectations. However, Mortal Kombat 11 has given fans nothing short of sheer confidence in its ability to deliver quality, price-worthy DLC characters.

With this in mind, it’s not surprising that the second one is small. It’s not the size of the Kombat Pack that counts, but the content it delivers. Rain joins the game’s ninja squad, and Rambo joins the action squad. Both characters fit right in, and at effectively $5/each, that’s a bargain for the quality NRS is known to deliver. Mileena joins them as one character who’ll be interesting to see appear in the game, but it’s hard to say for sure whether or not she would have joined without fan outcry for her. She doesn’t fit in as neatly in terms of content matter as Rain or Rambo due to her overarching narrative, but she does fit in perfectly for the fans.

The future remains uncertain, but with Kombat Pack 2 being part of the Ultimate Edition with a special launch in November, it could be that NRS is wrapping up its post-launch support with Mileena, Rain, and Rambo. That said, there is a MK11 datamine suggesting a total of 19 new characters before KP2. This could have just been misleading, or it could be that the game is far from over. It’s hard to say for sure, but with a title like Ultimate and an addition like Mileena, it may be the safest bet to assume so. Ed Boon has also said some stuff to the contrary, implying the developer wasn’t anywhere “klose” to being done about a month ago, but what that means is entirely subjective.

However, all good things have to come to an end. Mileena may be joining at the same time as the indomitable Rambo and the former Edenian prince Rain, but just as Spawn end capped KP1 with aplomb, Mileena is too—for KP2 and for the entire game, if so. Ed Boon has teased her so long that it was uncertain if it would ever happen, and for NetherRealm Studios to deliver upon those teases, it speaks volume about the company. MK11 didn’t have to include Mileena, there’s not much reason for it too outside fan demand (at least no more so than most characters), but it did anyway.

As such, it would see that Mortal Kombat 11 is adding Mileena for the fans. And if that’s not good post launch support, then there’s no such thing.

Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate will release for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on November 17th.
