Xbox Series X ‘Significantly Cooler’ Than First Thought

It’s hard to believe that the Xbox Series X is less than one month away from its release. After being teased for several years, consumers will soon be able to get their hands on next generation hardware. Though, a new report has recently come out seemingly disproving the Xbox Series X‘s reported overheating issues.

Within the last couple of weeks especially, there have been reports of the Xbox Series X having an issue with overheating. With so many conflicting testimonies and with the console not even out yet, it’s hard to know if these reports are true or simply hearsay. However, according to one industry insider, those reports are apparently more so the latter than the former.

Jeff Grubb of Venturebeat conducted a makeshift test to measure the temperature of the Xbox Series X and compare it to other consoles from the previous generation, such as an Xbox One X and the PS4 Pro. It showed that the standard temperatures of the Xbox Series X were a little less than those of the Xbox One X.

It’s important to note that Grubb used the same game to test out each console: Hitman 2. Good thinking on his part to have a singular game serve as a kind of control group. Although, it goes without saying that while this test is by no means perfect, it does sort of give people a sense of how hot the system can get depending on the game.

There are honestly a cacophony of different factors that dictate how hot any given console can get. How long the console has been running, certain design elements featured within the console itself, how powerful any given game is, and how well the game is optimized for that console in particular all dictate whether or not the console will overheat. For example, when Borderlands 3 first released, it had problems with overheating on certain Xbox One X consoles.

In any case, it doesn’t seem like the Xbox Series X will have inherent problems with overheating. Again, it will ultimately come down to a variety of different factors. However, should console owners choose, standing the console up vertically should drastically reduce any problems with overheating, due to how the cooling system is designed. It’s the reason why the stand on the Xbox Series X can’t be removed. In any case, once the console launches, consumers will be able to judge the console for themselves.

The Xbox Series X is set to launch on November 12th, 2020.
