Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 brought a pair of widely-beloved extreme sports titles back for modern audiences, and on the whole has been a successful venture. While many have been interested in taking on classic maps from the older games, the “Create a Park” stage builder mode has also gotten a lot of use thanks to players recreating popular video game locales like Delfino Plaza in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater.
One player who goes by SonicDagan765 on Reddit picked out a more thematically appropriate project last month when they decided to recreate the Sunny Villa and Enchanted Towers skate parks from Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon as one large, interconnected playground in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2. They say this was the first “actual” map they made in their post on the r/THPSCAP subreddit, and the work that was put in shows.
Aesthetically, the combined two maps look very similar to their original counterparts, despite transitioning from the cartoonish world of Insomniac Games’ PlayStation title to the realistic world of Tony Hawk, thanks to clever use of colored platforms. SonicDagan’s skate park is also accessible to large combos and more based on their video demonstration.
The creator said it took them about a week to put the park together during their off-time, and it was a seemingly meticulous process of copying design elements from watching a video before applying “many edits” to really replicate the game feel. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is the fastest-selling game in its franchise, according to Activision Blizzard, so it only makes sense that some of those players would be willing to pour their time into some creative endeavors.
The skate parks from Spyro 3 may have originated in 2000, but they were somewhat recently brought back into the mainstream thanks to Toys for Bob’s Spyro: Reignited Trilogy in 2018. Some have wondered whether a Spyro 4 will follow Toys for Bob’s Crash Bandicoot 4, but even if that theoretical game is created it’s unclear whether skateboarding is a mechanic it would bring back.
That being said, the resurgence of both these PlayStation icons thanks to their remake trilogies means anything is possible, and the work of creators like SonicDagan shows how much effort fans are willing to put in. Spyro has appeared in other odd places as of late, with one mod adding Spyro into Half-Life after two years of development.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
