Xbox Series X UI Displays in 1080p Instead of 4K | Game Rant

Although the Xbox Series X boasts improved graphic capabilities with 4K gaming, ray tracing, and frame rates up to 120 FPS, the system still has a major drawback. It appears that the Xbox Series X user interface will only support up to 1080p resolution.

Following a look at the PlayStation 5 user interface, Eurogamer writer John Linneman commented on one of the biggest drawbacks to the Xbox Series X system. Linneman makes comparisons to the capabilities of the Xbox One and PS4. While the Xbox One X only offered up to 1080p for the UI, the PS4 Pro supported native 4K. Although many fans may be focused on the games themselves, a smooth UI adds to the experience and navigation of consoles.

The PlayStation 5 user interface supports native 4K and HDR right away and has extensive gaming features as well. A new feature called “Activity Cards” allow players to jump into games at specific entry points. The Control Center is also accessible on any screen and shows all activity cards, and another helpful feature called Official Game Help. This feature brings up tutorials for trick parts in games and can even play it in a picture-in-picture mode. All of these features look and run smoother in 4K resolution.

The biggest setback with the Xbox Series X not supporting a 4K user interface is that many new features may not feel and look improved compared to the Xbox One. The Xbox Series X is in danger of having a UI that looks exactly like the last two generations. Although the games may be the focus of the Xbox Series X graphic capabilities, the UI is the first aspect of the new system that players will experience.

Despite potentially not updating the UI to 4K, the Xbox Series X UI has promising features and optimization based on the new update to the Xbox One interface expected to be rolling out this month. The new UI boasts faster menu navigation and improved load times for games, which claims to use 40% less memory than before. The Xbox One will benefit from the optimized UI, and the Xbox Series X will take it a step further with the introduction of Quick Resume.

The Quick Resume feature is highly anticipated and allows players to pause and resume multiple games without rebooting. The Xbox Series X will have new features in the UI, but the update to the Xbox One UI could also be a slight drawback for the Xbox Series X. Microsoft has stated that the updated UI is “shared experience across Xbox One and Series X|S consoles.” This means that the interfaces may look very similar and without 4K resolution, will appear like the last two Xbox generation consoles. Microsoft has yet to confirm the Xbox Series X UI resolution support so the capabilities may be subject to change.

The Xbox Series X and S will be available on November 10.
