Fallout 4: The 5 Hardest Quests In The Game (& 5 That Are Too Easy)

There are over 200 quests for the player to complete in Fallout 4, each with their own stories, rewards, and challenges. Whether it’s furthering the main story, helping out citizens of the commonwealth, or improving relations with a particular faction, there is a lot for the player to do.

While the difficulty of the quest will depend on the player’s skill and their level, there are some quests that fans consider consistently difficult and others that present zero challenge. These quests represent the most difficult moments of the game and others are so easy it’s a challenge to fail them.

10 Hard: Reunions

This main quest has the player track down Conrad Kellogg, the man who stole the protagonists child and killed their spouse in the beginning of the game. Part of this quest involves killing Conrad which is where the challenge comes in.

Conrad has a lot of health and strong levelled armor. He’s also not afraid to use the Stealth Boy, Stimpaks, and grenades in battle. On top of that he has levelled synth bodyguards providing him backup. It’s a tough fight that only gets tougher the higher the player’s level.

9 Easy: Nuka Cola Needs

In the Diamond City Market the player can find a man named Sheffield. Sheffield is addicted to Nuka-Cola and currently suffering withdrawal. He tasks the player with fetching him a Nuka-Cola to get his fix.

All the player needs to do is provide Sheffield with a bottle of Nuka-Cola to quench his soda craving. Bottles can be found throughout the game, in the stands overlooking the Market, or at one of the nearby vendors. For this easy task the player can recruit Sheffield as a settler.

8 Hard: Best Left Forgotten

In the Far Harbor DLC the player is required to obtain all of DiMA’s memories to confirm Kasumi’s suspicions about the Synth’s true motivations. It sounds simple enough, but actually obtaining those memories proves to be a nightmare.

The memories are locked away in the Nucleus Command Center which is guarded by some tough pre-war security. At higher levels players will face an Assaultron Dominator. Defeating these opponents allows the player to enter a simulation where they must complete five complicated puzzles to access the memories.

7 Easy: Sanctuary

The Sanctuary quest can admittedly be a bit tedious for some players, but it certainly isn’t difficult. After saving the Minutemen and meeting with them at Sanctuary the player will be tasked to follow Sturges’ direction to rebuild the town.

It’s basically a tutorial for settlement building and teaches the player to demolish items for resources, build the infrastructure, and make the settlement secure from invaders. For a few minutes of work the player is rewarded with a decent base of operations.

6 Hard: Cappy In A Haystack

While Sanctuary can be tedious it pales in comparison to Cappy In A Haystack. For this quest the player must scour several areas of Nuka-World in order to find small code letters hidden on the ground.

This means the player must traverse one of the most dangerous areas in the game looking for secrets in order to progress. Without a guide this takes quite a while and involves killing a multitude of strong raiders and other enemies.

5 Easy: Pool Cleaning

In Diamond City a young boy named Sheng Kawolski will ask the player to clean the town’s water supply of debris so it can flow properly. To complete this task the player to sift through the pond, find the five items, and bring them back to Sheng.

Granted the pool is irradiated so the player will need to move quickly, have healing items on hand, or be impervious to radiation. But given the abundance of vendors in the area and that it shouldn’t take long to find these items it’s an easy quest with low risk.

4 Hard: Defend The Castle

Following the Minutemen questline will task the player with securing the original headquarters of the faction, The Castle. Players are challenged to secure the Castle and then defend it against a wave of enemies.

These enemies are some of the toughest enemies in the game and each wave follows one after the other. Sure the player can establish defenses and Minutemen recruits will show up to help, but players who’ve faced the Mirelurk Queen can tell you this is one of the hardest quests in the game.

3 Easy: War Never Changes

This is the prologue/tutorial quest of the game and as a result is one of the easiest the player will perform. It begins when the player creates their character and ends when the player steps out of the cryo-chamber.

All the player has to do is follow the game’s instructions, speak with a few characters, and pay attention to cutscenes. It is technically possible to fail this quest if the player wanders too far outside town which will trigger the nuclear detonation, but most players will follow the instructions and automatically complete this quest.

2 Hard: Open Season

Many players consider Open Season to be the hardest quest in the game by far. There’s a number of ways to initiate this quest, though most will be charged with it by Preston Garvey. The idea is to wipe out each and every gang in Nuka-World.

Once the leader of a gang is killed their underlings across the park will immediately become hostile and target the player. As a result the player has to kill 80 high level, powerfully armed raiders, including the even stronger gang leaders who are rarely alone.

1 Easy: Greet The Dog

The easiest quest in the game by far is Greet The Dog. This quest initiates once the player finds the Red Rocket truck stop, arguably the first location most players find after leaving Sanctuary.

This objective is for the player to have a conversation with Dogmeat, that’s it. The reward for this quest is obtaining arguably one of the better companions in the game and all it takes is saying hi.
