Fallout: New Vegas 2’s Future Can Be Seen Through The Big MT

In Fallout: New Vegas‘ Old World Blues DLC, players were introduced to the Big Mountain Research and Development Center, more commonly known as the Big MT, Big Empty, or the Crater. Originally, it was an active, pre-Great War defense facility, yet over time, its modes and methods changed. By the time the New Vegas Courier arrives, the Big MT has been decimated into a crater, the scientists have had their mind wiped, and the self-contained environment had become simply bizzare.

The goal of the Big MT was to build the future of mankind with new, cutting-edge tech. This research was not meant to be limited morally or technically, although it’s worth mentioning that the Think Tank’s mind wipe became due to their increasingly degenerate research. Casting aside the more maligned nature of the facility, it’s worth pointing out how Fallout: New Vegas 2, the idea behind a sequel to the original, is much like the Big MT: full of promises of the future, however strange it may seem.

There were a few tenants to the Big MT as an idea that should be considered. First, it was to build the future. This started harmlessly enough with the development of the Saturnite alloy, holograms, stealth suits, new cyberdogs, and more. However, as the Big MT lost it way, new horrors were born such as mutagenic plants and cazadores. Secondly, the idea to this future was specifically designed with technology in mind, as evident by the original developments, and the Big MT has a big push for the “next generation,” hence the title of Old World Blues.

Finally, there was a staple of history to the Big MT. When Fallout: New Vegas character Ulysses, who manipulated game events behind the scenes to get at the Courier, talked to the Think Tank, he had a very dangerous question: “Who are you that do not know your history?” The implication here being that the future of the world will be defined by its past, and how people either come together or fall apart as this new world is established will play a big role. As a result, Ulysses believes in the individual’s impact on history, given how the Courier is inadvertently responsible for The Divide—in contrast, Ulysses is responsible for the hole in the Courier’s head.

It may seem strange, but these tenants can be applied to Fallout: New Vegas 2. This idea of a game is unique, arguably “the future” of the franchise “no matter how strange the idea.” Not long ago, if anyone was asked if Obsidian and Bethesda collaborating on New Vegas 2 was a possibility, they would have laughed. It’s no secret how that relationship soured, but the bombshell announcement of Microsoft’s Bethesda acquisition brings the companies all under one roof, making the strange seem possible.

The technology pillar of Big MT should also be obvious enough: the next generation of gaming consoles are almost here, with the next Fallout game likely to drop on it. Much like The Elder Scrolls 6, Fallout: New Vegas has the potential to push the Xbox Series X to the next level and re-define the future of Xbox.

Ulysses believes in the individual, and learning from the past to move into the future. Microsoft has done just that. It’s practically undeniable that the PS4 outperformed the Xbox One this generation, but with the leadership of Head of Xbox Phil Spencer, a focus on gaming and games instead of an “all-in-one” approach, and the acquisition of several first-party studios (of which Bethesda is just the biggest), the Xbox ecosystem is becoming more and more of a thing to draw gamers together, instead of allowing for “console wars” to be the prominent mentality.

The Big MT had a lot of potential but ultimately failed to live up to it. Although that’s a real possibility for every game, there’s every recipe of success here for Fallout: New Vegas 2 to succeed. With the backing of gaming giants and the minds set on a prosperous future, New Vegas 2 has as much potential now as any other long-awaited sequel, something it didn’t before.

A new Fallout game has not been announced.
