Minecraft Modder Plays DOOM on Sheep | Game Rant

Almost 27 years after its release, id Software’s Doom still retains its status as both the godfather of the modern FPS as well as one of the most popular titles in the modding community. A trend in recent years has involved modders porting the game to unconventional platforms, like Doom on a pregnancy test, with the newest of these projects appearing inside of Minecraft.

One modder, going by the name Treyzania, has posted a new video on their YouTube channel of a new mod that appears to make Doom playable on Minecraft, specifically using the sheep mobs as a screen. The mod was originally created for Bapcraft, a popular modding server for Minecraft, and Treyzania has made the plug-in available for fans to download and start creating for themselves.

The mod itself uses a large group of sheep spread across a grid in order to create a basic pixel map that footage from Doom is overlaid on top of, with each sheep acting as a single pixel. This is accomplished by repeatedly changing the colors of the sheep in order to best match the corresponding pixel from the file footage, creating a heavily pixilated image when viewed from above. Of course, similar to a recent mod that claims to play Skyrim on a keyboard, the truth behind the trick is that the plug-in is really just using the sheep as a screen, rather than actually playing Doom within the Minecraft engine.

About halfway through the video, the truth behind the mod becomes readily apparent as the footage switches away from Doom, revealing that the mod plays footage rather than live gameplay. It may be possible to run the 1993 game through the engine of a more modern title, but anyone looking for a recreation of the infamous playable GameBoy might be slightly disappointed. Regardless of how the effect is accomplished, it’s still a significant achievement to create this mapped out grid that can change the sheep colors on the fly in order to make a moving image out of so many individual Minecraft mobs.

As players continue to learn gameplay elements of Minecraft and modders continue to tinker with the game’s engine, it’s likely that the community will continue to push these mods further and further. Treyzania’s plug-in is a step in the right direction, making a usable screen with alternating pixels within Minecraft, but there is still more work to see Doom truly ported into the game. From there, it’ll only be a matter of time until more games like Skyrim and GTA 5 wind up inside of Minecraft in the future.

Minecraft is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
