The Most Overpowered Weapons in Call of Duty Franchise History

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is currently in the middle of its final Beta weekend and will be open to all players across all platforms for the next two days, no preorder required. With every new Call of Duty game, there will naturally be a few weapons that need to be re-tuned post-launch, even the Black Ops Cold War Alpha on PlayStation 4 last month had a troubling issue with the AK74u already being the best gun the game by a mile.

For a long-running franchise with as many entries as there are, what have been the most overpowered weapons in Call of Duty history?

It’s been twelve years since players were screaming at their TVs about the lethal Mp40 and Juggernaut combo in 2008’s Call of Duty: World at War, but it’s still the first thing to come to mind when talking about overpowered weapons in the series. The MP40 was unlocked in multiplayer at Level 10, meaning players had access to the weapon from the get-go, and it excelled across the board due to its high damage, large magazine, and tight hip spread. If there’s one Call of Duty weapon that could instill players with nightmares, its the MP40.

Potentially one of the most iconic weapons in the series, the M16A4 Assault Rifle has featured in eight different Call of Duty titles, making its debut in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Unlocked from the very start, the M16A4 dominated multiplayer due to its ability to one-burst kill enemies with or without the Stopping Power perk equipped. Given that Black Ops Cold War is set up as a direct sequel to the original Call of Duty: Black Ops, a cold war era version of this legendary weapon is back in the next game and at least from the Beta, it’s already proving to be a force to be reckoned with.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 had its fair share of overpowered weapons and questionable systems that catered toward newer players but nothing was quite on the level of the FMG9. The FMG9 was a secondary machine pistol in Modern Warfare 3 and was unlocked at Level 2. With a high rate of fire, high damage output, a large magazine, and the ability to be duel-wielded, very few weapons could compete. Unfortunately, rumors claiming that Modern Warfare 3 Remastered was already complete and waiting for the right time to release are still yet to be confirmed, so for better or for worse, these pistols will have to stay in the past.

Many players might recognize this weapon as the ARX-160 Assault Rifle from Call of Duty: Ghosts and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare; however, it made another appearance in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare under a new name, OSA. Despite having one of the worst default iron sights in recent memory, the OSA more than made up for it with a high fire rate, magazine size, and built-in grenade launcher. Infinity Ward nerfed the OSA throughout the lifecycle of Infinite Warfare, increasing the weapons damage drop off at longer ranges but that didn’t stop it from being an all-round versatile weapon to look out for.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 introduced a new weapon category called Tactical Rifles, made up of non-automatic Assault Rifles such as semi-automatic and burst-fire rifles. Being the first Tactical Rifle to unlock as soon as players gain access to Create-A-Class, the Auger DMR dominated the category due to its high damage, large magazine size, and ease of use in close quarters. When there’s a weapon that can dominate from any distance without much skilled required, maybe it’s a little too powerful.

When Call of Duty: Black Ops first released in 2010, the AK74u submachine gun dominated the game’s multiplayer mode and Treyarch was forced to step in and nerf the weapon. The fall of the AK74u led to the rise of the Famas, a revamped version of the popular MW2 Assault Rifle that unlocked early, had a predictable recoil pattern, a decent-sized magazine, and most importantly, a fast fire rate. The Famas wasn’t so strong that it could outclass the best of the best in any Call of Duty game but it was at the top of the class in Call of Duty: Black Ops, even after receiving numerous nerfs.

Similar to the Famas in Call of Duty: Black Ops, Advanced Warfare‘s Bal-27 was a low damage Assault Rifle that dominated due to its fast rate of fire and predictable recoil. What made the Bal-27 stand out was its variable fire rate: the first four rounds fire at 666 RPM, while all subsequent rounds fire at 705 RPM. On top of that, the Bal-27 had two fantastic Epic variants in the form of the Obsidian Steed which came with increased damage, and the Inferno which bumped the fire rate from 705 RPM to 857 RPM.

Until it was finally nerfed, Modern Warfare‘s 725 Shotgun was one of the most overpowered weapons the franchise had seen in a very long time, but there’s one shotgun it didn’t even compare to, the Model 1887. Pre-patch, the Call of Duty: MW2 Model 1887 was an unstoppable killing machine that had Sniper Rifle like range when players used the Akimbo attachment. Even after it was patched, the only way to combat these Akimbo secondary shotguns effectively was to stay as far away from the player as possible.

Treyarch did a great job at making Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 one of the most balanced games in the franchise, largely because of the game’s focus on competitive gameplay. While not many weapons in Black Ops 2 were “overpowered,” one weapon that clearly dominated its weapon class was the MSMC submachine gun. A combination of having the highest damage in its class, great hip fire spread, predictable recoil, and being surprisingly good at a distance made the MSMC incredibly versatile and very easy to use at all skill levels.

The FMg9 secondary submachine gun was previously mentioned as one of the most overpowered weapons in Call of Duty history and it goes hand in hand with another weapon from Modern Warfare 3, the Type 95. Due to make its long-awaited return in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War as the QBZ-83, the Type 95 was a three-round burst Assault Rifle that could compete at any range due to its high damage, fast fire rate, and tight hip fire spread, rivalling the COD4 M16A4 with its ability to kill in one burst.

Treyarch and Raven Software have put a lot of effort into giving players more options that will let them customize how they want to play in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War compared to previous entries. For its latest effort, Treyarch took a page out of Apex: Legends book and will be integrating a ping system which can be used to highlight certain things on the map. On top of that, for the first time on console, players will be able to adjust the FOV (field of view) slider, as well as toggle different aspects of the HUD including the compass, crosshairs, and more. Player customization in Black Ops Cold War seems to be of the utmost importance to the development team, so as long as no weapons are overpowered enough to make this year, it should be a strong year.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War launches November 13 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
