5 MMORPGs We Wish Were Ported To Consoles (& 5 That Can’t Be)

To many players, there is nothing better than to roam freely through epic landscapes while interacting with other players, questing, leveling up, and shaping your character in any way you want. You can do all those things and much more in an MMORPG.

However, most MMORPG’s are PC games, and therefore not available on consoles such as the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. A few MMORPG’s have been brought to consoles, such as Final Fantasy XIV and Black Desert. But there are many more that would be great additions to this list. And there are some that, although we would like to see them ported to consoles, are simply never going to get there.

10 RuneScape – Not Going To Happen

Let’s start with the oldest; RuneScape would make a great addition to the current collection of MMORPGs ported to consoles. RuneScape, which was released back in January 2001, takes place in Gielinor, a high-fantasy world filled with gods and monsters. However, while the game has been extremely popular for years after its release, the player base has greatly declined except for that small group of diehards. Although the game should not be too demanding for a console and has already been ported to mobile phones, it is unlikely that a console port would be worth the effort. Unlike mobile players, console owners have less outdated options available.

9 World Of Warcraft – Let’s Hope!

Probably the best-known MMORPG of all time, World of Warcraft still has millions of fans today. It is therefore no surprise that many players would be happy to see this classic MMORPG ported to consoles. Earlier this year, speculation about a possible port arose, and not for the first time. Fans hoped that the upcoming release of the Shadowlands expansion would coincide with an Xbox and PlayStation port. Blizzard was quick to deny those rumors, but there is still hope for a console port in the future.

8 EVE Online – Not Going To Happen

EVE Online is set in space, and therefore already one of the more original MMORPG’s out there. The game is perhaps best known for the massive virtual battle that took place in 2014, which is still considered one of the most remarkable events in gaming history. For that reason alone, it would be great to play such a classic game on a console.

However, a quick look at EVE Online forums will already tell you that its dedicated fanbase is not hoping for a port. It is highly unlikely that the developers will ever try to create one.

7 Albion Online – Let’s Hope!

A popular medieval fantasy MMORPG released back in 2017, Albion Online stands out due to its lack of a class-system and its player-driven economy. It has a very active community, and would undoubtedly be popular on consoles as well. Furthermore, unlike some of the other entries on this list, Albion Online is a fairly new game. Although the team has been busy with much-needed PC upgrades and additions up until now, they could probably pull off a port in the next few years if the game is still popular.

6 Lord of the Rings Online – Not Going To Happen

Lord of the Rings Online is a must-play for any high fantasy MMORPG fan. It is your one chance to truly become part of Tolkien’s Middle-Earth. Although many Lord of the Rings fans would therefore undoubtedly be happy to see Lord of the Rings Online ported to their PlayStation or Xbox, it is not going to happen. Keep in mind that the game is from 2007. Even in MMORPG years, that is old. Although new expansions are still being released, it would require too much work to create a console port.

5 Order and Chaos Online – Let’s Hope!

Order and Chaos Online was the first real MMORPG ever developed for mobile devices. Back in 2011, the game was very popular and would remain so for years to come. However, when the payment system changed from a monthly subscription to a free to play game with in-app purchases, many fans left the game.

As of today, the high fantasy Order and Chaos Online is still alive, but just barely. A console port might be the very thing to save it. Order and Chaos‘ highly immersive world, together with a one-time payment system or monthly subscription, could do really well as a Nintendo Switch MMORPG.

4 Guild Wars 2 – Not Going To Happen

A console port for high fantasy MMORPG Guild Wars 2 would definitely be welcomed by some of its fans, but it is not going to happen. Guild Wars 2 on a console would require a lot of work with the risk of losing much of the game’s depth. Furthermore, the team has speculated about making a console port many years ago but dropped those plans. It seems unlikely that the game, which now has a smaller fanbase and runs on in-game purchases, would be considered profitable on a console.

3 New World – Let’s Hope!

New World was originally planned to be released in 2020, but got delayed to 2021. Unlike many other MMORPG’s you play as a human, and can’t run around as an elf or an orc. The most remarkable feature will likely be their ‘Company’ system that allows players to fight for control over certain territories. Although this is Amazon’s first major game release, expectations are quite high and many gamers would be happy to see a console release. So far, developers have denied any plans in that direction. As the graphics requirements are not extremely high and the developers are still actively working on the game, a future console port does not seem that unlikely.

2 Blade & Soul – Not Going To Happen

Blade & Soul is a very popular Korean action MMORPG with a focus on martial arts. Although released in Korea back in 2012 and in the USA and Europe in 2016, Blade & Soul is one of the most popular MMORPG’s to this day. Interestingly, the developers announced that the game would be ported to consoles even before its PC release. Unfortunately for console players though, nothing else has been mentioned on the subject ever since. Since it has been ten years, it is highly unlikely that Blade & Soul will ever come to console.

1 Ashes of Creation – Let’s Hope!

Ashes of Creation is perhaps the most exciting upcoming MMORPG. The main reason why players are hyped for this game is because of the developer’s claim that this MMORPG will truly be shaped by its players. Others have claimed to do so before, but Ashes of Creation-players will have the ability to build entire cities by themselves. The developers promise a world that will never stop changing. Reason enough to be excited about the PC release, but what’s more: the developers have disclosed that although they focus on PC only for now, a console release may follow in the future. Yes, we’ve heard that one before, but at least there is hope!
