It is still difficult to believe, but the PlayStation 5 is less than a month away from release. As the hours are counting down to November 12th, Sony is slowly trickling out more information regarding their next piece of gaming hardware.
Recently, the company finally unveiled the PlayStation 5’s user interface (UI) with an eleven minute video detailing all the new features and upgrades one should expect from the operating system come November 12th. While numerous changes are present, eight of them in particular stick out as real game changers for Sony fans, influencing the way they will interact with the PlayStation community and the games themselves.
8 The PlayStation Store Is No Longer An App
While it may seem simple to set up a digital shop, most gamers have gripes with both the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Live Marketplace. PS5 looks to fix some of these issues as the store will now be a part of the system, and not a separate application one has to load up. Hopefully, it makes the action of going to the PlayStation Store while playing a game a more seamless experience for console owners.
7 The Control Center
On the PS4, pressing the PS button in the center of the DualShock 4 brings up a whole other menu and puts the game in the background. Holding the button brings up another set of options, but these are limited. The PS5’s Control Center is just a tap away, and the overlay rests over the game instead of minimizing the game session. This menu is populated by cards, which players select to gather news or access other features.
6 Increased Party Functionality
Party chat was a great feature on the PlayStation 4, and the PlayStation 5 seeks to increase the ways in which friends can interact with each other. During the presentation, one member of the party started sharing their gameplay of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, which the host was watching while still in the middle of playing through their Sackboy: A Big Adventure session. A tiny portion of the screen was devoted to showing the Uncharted gameplay of the friend. Many friends keep in touch purely through gaming, and the expanded party features will help exponentially.
5 4K Screenshots And Capture
With its increased accessibility due to the decreasing costs of the associated television sets, more and more people are getting into 4K gaming. Sony is keeping up with the demand, creating both video and photo capture in glorious 4K resolution.
The option to capture recent gameplay from the prior console was a beautiful feature many players utilized, and upgrading it to a higher quality will only encourage more gamers to take advantage of it. It allows PS5 owners to collect and remember great gaming moments on the console.
4 Explore
One tab on the user interface is called Explore, which is where players can go to for up-to-date information on the PlayStation specifically and gaming in general. However, this feature is still in its early phase and will be more experimental than definitive upon the console’s launch in the United States. One can expect to see many changes and updates to it after launch, but the basic idea seems promising. It could theoretically allow owners of the PS5 to use the feature to keep up with news on a daily basis.
3 Activities
With the advantage of the SSD, games can now load and boot up faster than ever. Utilizing this newfound speed is the Activities section of the PlayStation 5 user interface, where players can look at their progress in games and jump in to a certain spot in a title.
It is important to note, however, that this feature may not be available for every PlayStation 5 game, or at least not to the extent to which it was shown during the showcase. Other titles may not have incorporated this feature into their inner workings.
2 Games And Apps Are Separated
This is a small change, but it represents a big departure from the way the PlayStation 4 use interface functions. When in the main menu, video games and other media apps will be entirely separate. While this is a minor departure from previous UI iterations, it will make fishing around for Netflix, Hulu, or any of the other streaming apps significantly easier, especially if someone who is not into gaming is using the console for just such a purpose.
1 Hints
During the presentation, people got to see some gameplay of Sackboy: A Big Adventure. The player had some trouble passing a certain part, so they pulled up the menu and searched for hints, which included a video instruction on how to achieve the objective. Not only is this more convenient, but it also removes the danger of running into spoilers while looking for help on a regular search engine. This hint feature could dramatically impact the manner in which a player approaches a puzzling situation in a title.
