Kingdom Hearts Creator Teases Switch Ports | Game Rant

Switch ports of classic Kingdom Hearts games may soon come to Nintendo Switch, if a recent interview with series creator Tetsuya Nomura is any indication. This will surely amplify fan excitement for the upcoming Switch release of Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory.

The Kingdom Hearts series is well-known for its mind-bending narrative spanning all kinds of media. This is partially due to the way the games were originally released. requiring players to own multiple consoles to keep up with the story. For example, although several spin-offs released for Nintendo consoles, the series’ first two main installments were PlayStation exclusive. Square Enix rectified this situation by releasing anthology collections for PlayStation and Xbox consoles, but those never arrived on Nintendo consoles.

Nomura’s latest comments come through an interview in the newest issue of Nintendo Dream, a Japanese magazine. Nomura states that he may soon have good news for Nintendo Switch owners regarding Kingdom Hearts content. This may indicate that the series’ anthology collections could come to Switch, or that new content will arrive on the Switch instead. Granted, Nomura denied more Kingdom Hearts games for Switch in September. but plans can surely change as the franchise evolves.

By process of elimination, fans might be able to infer an upcoming port of older games. As a start, Nomura was almost surely not teasing Kingdom Hearts 3. Square Enix allegedly called a Kingdom Hearts 3 port impossible given its demanding graphics. For another, Nomura may have intended to deny bringing any future series games to the Switch in his September interview. This means that the only major possibility remaining is to port the older games to Switch, which should be able to run them proficiently.

Switch owners will likely be very excited about the possibility of playing through the series on the Switch. Given that Kingdom Hearts 3 received a warm critical reception in 2019, newcomers may be curious to see what the hype is about. Others may look forward to playing the games on the go, as a Switch iteration would represent the first time many Kingdom Hearts games would be portable. Finally, some may not want to tangle with the series lore unless they can start from the beginning on the Switch.

More cynical fans could argue that ports are unnecessary. Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory will serve as a recap of the overall Kingdom Hearts story, so fans should be able to get up-to-speed in advance of future installments. Additionally, given the series’ infamous development delays, some might encourage any resources at Nomura’s disposal to be put towards new games, rather than porting old ones.
