A recent sports game controversy is proving to be particularly frustrating to some. NBA 2K21 apparently has unskippable advertisements, and given the game is priced at $70 thanks to the next-gen video game price hike, many fans are annoyed that they have to pay extra money for a game that will then force them to watch ads.
NBA 2K21 has been out for over a month now, and review bombing on Metacritic has resulted in a low user review score of 0.9 given many are annoyed at a perceived lack of contrast between this game and its predecessor. Some gamers have also been frustrated as more titles confirm a next-gen price hike, although there are some okay with the idea if there’s a major increase in game quality.
In keeping with a trend from NBA 2K20, unskippable ads show up in NBA 2K21. One prominent leaker on Twitter who goes by Okami13_ shared a video from Stevivor editor Steve Wright showing an Oculus Quest 2 ad that appears when players load up a game, and there was no way for the user to skip past the ad.
These ads weren’t present at launch, and it’s unclear when exactly 2K made the decision to incorporate them. Many Twitter users have already expressed their opinions on exactly what they think about unskippable ads in NBA 2K21, and virtually nobody is happy with the decision. No one wants to be taken out of their game-playing experience by an unrelated product.
NBA 2K19 also had unskippable ads, so this trend is not new and doesn’t look like it’s going to stop any time soon. Still, many users are annoyed that they’re paying more money for NBA 2K21 on next-gen hardware than for 2K20 or 2K19, yet they’re getting hit with the same ads. Add to the fact that many players are complaining that NBA 2K21 isn’t unique or new enough, and it’s hard for many players to see how this could be anything other than a cash grab.
While the controversial NBA 2K21 has disappointed fans in multiple ways, it did bring some features that many people enjoy, like adding in the WNBA and improving the player ratings system. It remains to be seen whether 2K will back down on its decision to introduce unskippable ads given how strong backlash from the community has been.
NBA 2K21 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions in development.
