The Nintendo Switch continues to dominate in sales, with the popular hybrid console consistently bringing in new players through exclusives like Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The dominance of the Switch in September allowed it to break a record once held by the Xbox 360 as well, and it is quite the impressive feat.
Nintendo continuing to sell the Switch in high amounts is unsurprising, as the Switch platform has found incredible success in Japan and around the world. The interesting thing about this new record broken by the Switch, however, is that it pertains to the United States. The record in question sees the Switch becoming the bestselling console in the US for an incredible 22 months straight, surpassing the Xbox 360’s 21 months on top from 2011-2013.
Switch sales have been on the rise for well over a year, with the Nintendo Switch surpassing the Wii’s sales records from 2008 recently as well. With the company not only beating out its own records but this longstanding 360 record too, the Switch shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, according to video game sales analyst Ryng, the “Switch record can go even further.” The analyst firmly believes that the console will reign supreme in the month of October as well.
Ryng goes on to state that “it will be interesting to see if Switch remains the bestselling console in November,” with the analyst pointing out the major releases of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Ryng states that they “expect a very big launch” for the PS5 and Series X, but reiterates that Switch sales “are massive” right now. Other analysts have echoed this belief, with many believing that the Series X and PS5 will not dominate holiday sales.
It is hard to argue against this prediction when looking at just how well the Switch performed in September. The console sold an incredible 670,000 units, with the PS4 selling 160,000 and the Xbox One only entering 90,000 new homes. While the comparison should be taken with a grain of salt considering that both the PS4 and Xbox One have been out for a while, and there are new consoles on the way, the Switch’s September remains impressive. With Nintendo promising to provide more exclusive games to extend the Switch’s life cycle, the console will likely remain high on the NPD sales charts for some time.
With Nintendo supposedly working on a newer, more powerful version of the Switch as well, the future seems bright for the console. How long the new US sales record continues remains to be seen, but the 360’s former milestone being surpassed at all is a huge accomplishment for the Nintendo Switch.
The Nintendo Switch is available now.
