Last week, Sony released PlayStation 4 update 8.00, which caused widespread backlash in the community. PS4 update 8.00 removed some features fans were using, while also warning players that other users would be allowed to record their voices in party chat and report them to Sony. The latter proved to be especially contentious for the community, prompting a response from PlayStation itself.
Taking to Twitter, PlayStation has acknowledged that fans are upset about the PlayStation party chat recording controversy, and is “looking into” feedback on the changes. PlayStation thanked fans for “speaking up” about the situation and promised to keep them posted. This statement could simply be an attempt by PlayStation to get people to stop complaining about the PlayStation party chat changes, but it could also mean that it is genuinely looking into reversing the controversial decision. Fans will have to stay tuned to find out more.
In the meantime, the controversial PlayStation party chat changes are set to be in-place when the PS5 launches on November 12. It seems as though these party chat changes were actually made with the PS5 in mind, but since the PS5 and PS4 have cross-gen functionality, Sony applied them to both systems. If Sony does decide to reverse its decision to allow users to record others in party chat and report them, it’s unclear if such a decision will be made prior to the new console’s launch.
This controversy has proven to be pretty severe, but at the same time, it is unlikely to have too much of an impact on PS5 sales. In fact, PS5 pre-orders are sold out everywhere, and the console is expected to be in extremely high demand when it launches. It’s possible that even those who are upset about these party chat changes will be able to look past them if it means getting to play PS5 games.
The new chat recording feature isn’t the only change coming to PlayStation parties on PS5. The recent PS5 UI presentation revealed that party chats will also allow for text messages instead of just voice chats, among some other improvements. So while some changes made to PlayStation parties are arguably for the worse, Sony is also making some changes that may be better-received by the community as well.
With the PlayStation 5 release date just a few weeks away, fans don’t have to wait too much longer to find out if the party chat controversy is going to have any kind of impact on the new console’s success.
