One of the most rewarding things about building a computer from scratch is being able to completely customize the computer’s aesthetic. Some gamers can spend years putting together the perfect build. User Paiyan put together a computer inspired by AMD‘s Ryzen line of processors, and this particular build features a Ryzen 3900X, a bright inner space, and a soothing palette of wood and stone.
The build took three years from concept to reality and was finished last July. It takes the core Japanese aesthetic principles of Kanso (simplicity), Seijaku (tranquility), Shibui (subtle textures), Shizen (natural forms), and Yugen (intrigue) and puts them to practice, essentially finding zen in the art of computer building. Without a doubt, Paiyan has created a build for the AMD Ryzen that is a celebration of form alongside function.
This particular aesthetic would not be possible without the glass panels provided by a Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic PC case, which has tempered glass panels and the right shape for Paiyan to incorporate Jarrah wood and Tasmanian Oak into the frame. In the back of the build there is an unassuming red and black panel displaying a logo with the Japanese characters 神羅 and the words “Shin-Ra Electric Power Company” in gold, which is the logo used by a shady power company in Final Fantasy VII which produced Mako energy by condensing the lifestream of the world into liquid and solid form. This is a wonderful little detail that draws the eye in and invites the viewer to explore the interior of the computer case, an essential in zen aesthetics.
One of the biggest challenges for Paiyan was getting the wiring to fit the gaming system’s color scheme. A light-diffusing shoji made of wood and traditional “washi” paper lights up the interior while also concealing some of the build’s wiring, and wires which could not be hidden were custom sleeved with 550 paracord. The bottom of the computer case is a zen rock garden of small white stones and larger, darker, irregularly sized stones. A tiny bonsai set off to one side, or perhaps on top as desired, completes the look.
The use of wood in a computer build can be risky, since the material acts as an insulator. The challenge then becomes ensuring that there is adequate airflow to keep the component parts from overheating, such as the Nvidia 2080 graphics card, which will produce plenty of heat when the machine is in use. The wooden panel directly above it may have been added with the intent of directing airflow from the graphics card downward into the rock garden.
