The 2020 U.S. Presidential election is coming in fast, and now more than ever, even celebrities are feeling the urge to publicly take sides. Chris Evans, who has already made his political leanings pretty clear online, has rounded up a few of his colleagues to support his preferred candidate. On October 20th, Captain America himself will be joined by Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, and Zoe Saldana in order to raise funds for the Biden campaign.
In case there was any doubt over whether this was a coincidence, the event is titled Voters Assemble! The Cast of the Avengers United for Democracy. This is an interesting follow up to one of the campaign’s recent events which was entirely Star Trek themed, and featured quite a few cast members from the various shows. It would seem that the Biden campaign is getting quite a lot of support from major cultural touchstones, and they’re attempting to use that support to the best of their ability.
Like the previous Star Trek event, this fundraiser will be entirely virtual, and will be available to anyone who wishes to donate. The suggested donation amount to get in is $25 dollars, but there seems to be no minimum donation in order to get invited. So long as participants donate some amount through ActBlue’s website, they will receive instructions regarding how to access the event. While the Coronavirus pandemic makes in-person campaign events difficult, one of the unexpected benefits has been the ability to use virtual events that can gather up quite a few big names without the trouble of everyone needing to be physically in attendance.
Of course, the last event didn’t go %100 percent smoothly for the Biden campaign. A few of the actors who made an appearance during the Star Trek even had their own political opinions that the campaign might have preferred not come up. Wil Wheaton in particular praised attendee Andrew Yang for his support of universal basic income, while Marina Sirtis admitted that she leans further left than Biden on most issues, but felt beating Trump was more important for the time being, both of which being opinions the Biden campaign would likely have preferred went unsaid. Still, it seems the strategy was successful enough to double down on it with another similar event, which will take place October 20th.
