Home Improvement Star Zachery Ty Bryan Arrested for Assault

Zachery Ty Bryan, known for playing the eldest son Brad on the 90s sitcom Home Improvement, has been arrested in Eugene, Oregon for an alleged assault. Police found the actor and his girlfriend, the alleged victim, at a North Eugene apartment complex after receiving a report of a physical altercation.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, 39 year old Bryan has been charged with strangulation, 4th-degree assault, and interfering with a police report. 4th-degree assault appears to be the least grievous of potential assault charges, as it doesn’t necessarily even require the victim to be injured. The circumstances of the charge concerning the police report are unknown, but as for the strangulation, Bryan allegedly attacked his 27 year old girlfriend and took away her phone when she attempted to call 911.

Police reportedly arrived to find Bryan sitting outside one apartment while the victim was found in a neighboring unit. The victim declined medical assistance, which supports the 4th-degree assault charge, but shouldn’t downplay the severity of the situation and the danger she might have been facing. The police have given no further updates on the case or charges at this time.

This incident comes mere weeks after Bryan announced his divorce from his wife of 13 years, Carly Matros, in a now deleted Instagram post. Interestingly, he also deleted a post he’d made the night of the alleged assault that appeared to show him enjoying a night out. Whether the erasure of those posts is intentional for legal purposes (or privacy) or simply a coincidence, it’s probably best either way.

While Bryan is best known for his role on Home Improvement, he remained relatively active for a time following the show’s end, notably gravitating towards guest-starring in more teen-focused projects like Buffy the Vampire SlayerSmallville, and Veronica Mars. He also appeared briefly in 2006’s The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift before retiring from acting in 2009. Up until this arrest, he and his family had been mostly keeping to themselves with minimal media cracking into his personal life.

Unfortunately, incidents like this appear to be all too common when it comes to former child stars. Being in the spotlight from a young, impressionable age, their worldviews and personalities can often become skewed by the nature of showbusiness, and being around some inevitably less than noble costars certainly wouldn’t help either. Hopefully both Bryan and his alleged victim can both get the help they need following this unfortunate occurrence.
