As players grind out Destiny 2‘s seasonal event, Festival of the Lost, Bungie has steadily provided more details about the upcoming expansion, Beyond Light. Today, just before the weekly reset, fans have been greeted with a story trailer packed with brand-new cinematic shots and character moments.
Destiny 2: Beyond Light is just three weeks away at the time of the trailer release. It was delayed from its original launch date to give the developers a bit more time to iron out rough edges and ensure a healthy launch. As the game is more or less complete at this point, the studio has been ramping up its pace of releasing news.
While the general pitch of the story has been known since the initial Beyond Light stream, this is the first time fans have been able to see pre-rendered campaign cutscenes. The main draw here is the re-imagining of Eramis, the Shipstealer, as the empress of the new Dark Fallen empire on Europa.
The trailer clearly shows Eramis addressing her followers, telling them how her kind needs to climb back to its glory days. She bestows the power of Stasis on her loyalists, a new Dark element first discovered on Europa, so that they can wreak havoc. This gesture hearkens back to Oryx and how he used his Dark power to terrorize the system. The main difference is while Oryx used the power to bind his compatriots to him, Eramis endows her kin with the same power she has. Her collection of Captains is also reminiscent of the diverse cast of Barons from Forsaken.
A returning fan-favorite character, Variks the Loyal, is also part of the group of Fallen on Europa. However, he is openly terrified of dabbling with Darkness, believing that it will lead to his kind’s downfall. He desperately sends out a help signal, which is first answered by the Exo Stranger. This call for help will be the start of the campaign missions once players boot up Beyond Light.
One pleasant surprise is the reappearance of a voiced Guardian. Destiny 2‘s first year was notorious for having a silent protagonist, the player character. This story trailer shows the Guardian conversing with his Ghost on Europa, a welcome addition to the campaign. Bungie ends the trailer with a quote from Eramis revealing her endgame, which suggests that the Traveler will have its comeuppance for abandoning her kind years ago. This could also be nudging the story towards the Lightfall expansion where the Traveler will, in some way, be assaulted.
Overall, it is great to see concrete evidence of a strong villain who will drive the story in Beyond Light. Many veteran players are fond of The Taken King because of how well illustrated Oryx was as the defined antagonist. Likewise, Eramis looks to be a charismatic leader, and will provide a clear story motivation for the beginning of Year 4 in Destiny 2.
Destiny 2: Beyond Light releases November 10, 2020 for PC, PS4, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 version will be available on November 12.
