Pokemon GO trainers are getting ready to shift into Halloween mode as the big festivities approach. Players should be wrapping up the previous research events and beginning to shift their focus to special spooky shiny Ghost-types, new Battle Raid bosses, and all of the other bonuses and features coming during Halloween 2020.
This is the first major holiday event since Mega Raids were added to the mobile AR experience, so it will be exciting to see how popular that feature is during the event. Mega Venusaur will be disappearing from the Mega Raid rotation to help make room to Mega Gengar to take its place. That doesn’t mean Pokemon GO players necessarily have to be done using Mega Venusaur for their own battles though…
Some of the changes coming in November will offer additional ways to earn Mega Candy outside of just battling in additional Mega Raids. Although that will remain the quickest path to Mega Candy, player feedback has helped convince Niantic that there need to be more (and easier) ways to earn the valuable resource if Mega Evolutions are going to become an important part of the Pokemon GO metagame.

You’ll be able to earn Venusaur Mega Energy by completing select Field Research tasks.
An upcoming event in November will feature Timed Research that rewards Venusaur Mega Energy.
Additional opportunities to earn Mega Venusaur candy will be revealed in the near future.
Earn Mega Energy by walking with your Buddy Pokémon if you have previously Mega Evolved a Pokémon in your Buddy Pokémon’s Evolutionary line.
Earn additional Candies when you have an active Mega-Evolved Pokémon and you catch a Pokémon that shares a type with your Mega-Evolved Pokémon. You will also earn additional Candies when catching a Raid Boss, regardless of its type.
See Trainers on your friend list who currently have a Mega-Evolved Pokémon.
The changes to Mega Evolutions, and the addition of a new Mega Raid, should help make the end of October and beginning of November very exciting for PoGO players. Mega Gengar was hinted very early after Mega Evolutions and Raids were revealed, but which Pokemon will take the spotlight after Gengar leaves remains a mystery for the time being. Hopefully subsequent events throughout the rest of the fall and winter holiday season will bring some additional Pokemon into the Mega spotlight in the near future.
For now, Pokemon GO trainers should be able to head out into the world (or play from home) and continue catching the best Unova Pokemon in the game and getting closer to that complete Pokedex. Check back for more Pokemon GO updates closer to the event. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!
Pokemon GO is available now in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
