Few PC gamers can be in any doubt that stock of Nvidia’s powerful flagship GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card has been limited, but many may be surprised to learn just how limited the actual supply numbers reportedly are. Information from a major European retailer of gaming components suggests that Nvidia and its hardware partners have supplied just a small fraction of the RTX 3080 cards ordered.
The details come from Proshop, a large Danish online retailer, who supply to several countries in Europe. Facing so many requests for information, the site has started publishing a daily list of order and supply numbers for Nvidia and its RTX 3090, RTX 3080, and RTX 3070 hardware partners. The numbers at the time of writing show Proshop has ordered 9015 RTX 3080 cards, but have only received 489, with another 272 listed as incoming.
These numbers mean that just 8.4% of RTX 3080 cards ordered by the retailer have been fully or partially fulfilled, reducing to just 5.4% for cards actually received. With the launch of the RTX 3070 less than two weeks away, it appears the situation will be similar for the mid-range card, with only 12.2% of the retailer’s orders having been received or listed as incoming.
Given that the RTX 3080 launched on September 17, the continuing low supply numbers are disappointing many gamers who were looking forward to boosting their graphics performance. Despite apologizing for a launch that was described by some as shambolic, it appears that the low supply situation is unlikely to change for a considerable amount of time. Rumors of low component supply existed prior to the launch, and appear to have been proved accurate. Nvidia is fair to state that demand for the RTX 3080 was much higher than anticipated though, and the delay to the RTX 3070 launch will hopefully allow them to provide extra last-minute supply for launch day. It should also be noted that other suppliers may have different stock situations to Proshop, so overall supply figures may be higher than indicated here.
Perhaps the biggest beneficiary of Nvidia’s issues is likely to be AMD, whose new RDNA 2 powered RX 6000 Series graphics cards will be unveiled on October 28, and are expected to launch on November 5. With Nvidia’s long supply delays expected to continue well into 2021, if AMD’s flagship Big Navi / RX 6900 XT card can prove a powerful competitor at a reasonable price, tens of thousands of gamers are likely to be tempted to switch their orders.
Of course, if gamers do suddenly flood the market with Big Navi / RX 6900 XT orders, AMD may find itself in a similar position to Nvidia. Hopefully though, both AMD and Nvidia will learn quickly from the mistakes of the RTX 3080 launch, and will provide stronger stock levels for upcoming RX 6000 Series and RTX 3000 Series products and beyond.
