Sekiro 2 Could Become the Next Bloodborne 2 | Game Rant

From Software hasn’t exactly had a massive impact on the gaming industry in 2020, with the biggest announcement from the developer taking the form of the upcoming Demon’s Souls Remake. Even in the case of this upcoming remake, the major development isn’t being handled by the original developer, leaving fans wondering what the fate of anticipated tiles like Elden Ring, Bloodborne 2, and Sekiro 2. That’s not to say anything against From Software, as it has certainly earned its pedigree, but 2020 has indeed been an odd year for the company, as well as the industry as a whole.

This lack of news has some players wondering if there are plans for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice 2 at From Software, and if either it or any other new sequels are currently in development by From Software. To a degree, it seems as though the sequel that some of the original game’s ending seemingly alluded to is as far from hitting store shelves, as the prospective Bloodborne 2 some fans hoped would arrive alongside the PS5.

Looking at the history of From Software’s development cycles and the way that many of the studio’s lead designers have approached similar games, it’s easy to draw conclusions of the likelihood of Sekiro 2. While there is plenty that fans hope to see arrive with a Sekiro sequel’s new features, the developer’s recent trend with sequels doesn’t offer much hope for new content beyond a few updates. Altogether, the situation with From Software’s most recent title might turn out the same as Bloodborne, a similarly acclaimed game with little to no indication of a sequel coming anytime soon.

From Software isn’t exactly new to creating sequels, with two of the developers’ oldest franchises including multiple spin-offs and direct continuations, such as King’s Field and Armored Core. However, since Hidetaka Miyazaki took the helm of the development studio’s most well respected titles, the company has trended towards more original games that act as spiritual sequels to each other as opposed to a direct continuity. The outlier in this scenario would be Dark Souls 2, which wasn’t headed by From Software’s usual creative director and is often regarded as the lesser installment within the Dark Souls trilogy.

To this degree, the only titles that fans can confirm are in development are the Demon’s Souls Remake, helmed primarily by Bluepoint Games, and Elden Ring, still without a release date. From this perspective, it would seem that From Software isn’t currently interested in taking successful games and turning them into an extended series like the Dark Souls trilogy. Instead, the developer has had much more success by taking the strongest features from these previous titles and re-examining them with a new lens, the way Sekiro did with stealth and blocking mechanics and Bloodborne did with dodging and aggression.

If there is any game that From Software fans have been excited to hear about above even Elden Ring, it would be the highly anticipated Bloodborne 2 that isn’t likely in development. A number of factors continue to impact the community’s anticipation for a sequel to the PS4 exclusive, including the upcoming PS5 release and the five years since the original. However, a similarly rumored title is Sekiro 2, which players expect might continue from the “true ending” from the first game and keep the stealth and dueling combat moving forward with a series.

At this point, it would seem that From Software is still supportive of the title, with Sekiro receiving an update soon, but there is no indication that a sequel is quite on the way. Considering the company’s history up until this point, it may be best for players to embrace the idea that From Software doesn’t have much intention to continue on with the series, unless there is massive fan outcry. Fortunately for Sekiro fans over Bloodborne fans, however, is that a ninja/samurai sequel is more up to the developer than it is up to a publisher like Sony to order a new project.

Sekiro 2 is not confirmed to be in development.
