Sony Bravia X900H 120hz Update Available Now, Here’s How to Activate It

With both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X supporting up to 120 frames per second, gamers need a TV that can keep up. In response to this, Sony released two PS5-ready TVs, the Sony Bravia X900H and the Sony Z8H, earlier this year. However, the TVs were incapable of displaying 120hz until the release of a recent firmware update, which is available now to any Bravia X900H or Sony Z8H owners.

After downloading the new update, users will have to actually activate the 120hz feature. To do this, they will need to go to Settings, Watching TV, External Inputs, and HDMI Signal Format. This will take them to their HDMI ports, and they will find that HDMI ports 3 and 4 will have the HDMI 2.1 capabilities that the PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles can take advantage of. After selecting HDMI 3 or 4, users should have the option to activate the Enhanced Format that includes 4K 120p. Of course, it won’t be much use until the new consoles come out, but users can get their TVs ready in the meantime.

Meanwhile, those that have the Sony Z8H TV may have the most future-proofed display there is. Not only does the TV support 120hz, but it also displays at up to 8K resolution. Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X technically support 8K, though it’s unlikely that many games will take proper advantage of the functionality. Right now, 8K television sets are far too expensive for the average consumer, and with the Z8H selling between $6,999 and $9,999, it’s an extravagant expense most simply can’t afford at this time.

Eventually, 8K television sets will drop in price and become more widely-adopted, at which point more video games will likely take advantage of the higher resolution. However, that is likely years down the road, to the point where it may become a selling point feature for the consoles that come after the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Those consoles have yet to be announced, but considering the immediate sales success of both the Series X and PS5, it’s highly unlikely that this next console generation will be the last.

Xbox Series X and PS5 pre-orders are sold out pretty much everywhere, showing that there remains an incredibly high demand for dedicated home console gaming systems. Some analysts have predicted the fall of console gaming for years, only to be proven incorrect time and time again. Now some are predicting that the PS5 will be the best-selling console ever, and so maybe the inevitable PlayStation 6 will come out at a time when 8K TVs are more affordable.

In the meantime, gamers can pick up the Sony Bravia X900H or the Sony Z8H and update them to the latest firmware to get the most out of the next-generation gaming consoles.
