Producer Tomoya Asano reveals that the work-from-home mandate has had a major impact on the development of the Nintendo Switch exclusive Bravely Default 2.
In an interview with Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Asano explained how the team behind Bravely Default 2 didn’t have remote work plans finalized while the Covid-19 restrictions took place earlier in the year. Though Square Enix is now teasing that new information on Bravely Default 2 is coming soon, developer Team Asano went through some major hardships in 2020.
The work-from-home mandate took effect in early April and without much notice, forcing the developer to quickly plan for the new process. Being unprepared for the new restrictions hampered the development of the game and caused concern. With restrictions eventually lifting in Japan, the team is now able to work in the studio once more, slowly going back to a normal development routine.
Covid-19’s impact on the games industry has been felt by developers and publishers alike. Both Sony and Microsoft have resorted to video announcements in place of in-person conferences to unveil the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, respectively. The virus has impacted plans for EA, Ubisoft, and Nintendo regarding game announcements as well. For its part, Square Enix has not had much trouble overall with no significant game delays including officially announcing Final Fantasy 16.
Meanwhile Bravely Default 2 was recently rated in Australia, suggesting the game’s release date could come soon. While no announcement has been officially made by Square Enix, Bravely Default 2 is still currently slated for a 2020 release.
Bravely Default 2 will launch exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
