The Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War beta officially ended yesterday. With a final update that unlocked all weapon attachments, it was a wild ride for players.
Players learned a lot from the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War beta. Staunch Call of Duty players had a chance to see what the future of the Black Ops games looked like. Obviously the new game would have to compete with Call of Duty: Warzone for attention. So giving players from a different title incentive to try it out could help get more players. And that’s exactly what Activision did.
Not everyone was impressed by what was offered in Cold War. Several streamers had criticisms about the game, citing its tired formula and some issues they had with its game modes. For the average player though, these problems were largely negligible. Cross-game promotion was also brought in to help players get engaged. Anyone who played the beta got a Russel Adler skin for Call of Duty Mobile that they can now redeem.
Russel Adler is a new character introduced in Cold War. He’s a CIA agent who will be important to the game’s story. In Call of Duty Mobile he gives no special bonuses or powers, he’s simply a player skin. This sort of cross-promotion is not usual for the Call of Duty series, but it makes sense here. Mobile has made Activision a lot of money, so appealing to its players to get involved in Black Ops could easily wind up selling more copies of the game to Mobile fans.
The skin can be redeemed through a code received via email. Players will have to check the email associated with their account for the Cold War Beta, then use the code and password in Mobile. Odds are few Mobile players got involved just for the skin, but if they did, hopefully the beta’s cheater problem didn’t cause them too much grief.
Only time will tell if Black Ops stands tall or really shows the age of the Call of Duty formula. Considering some players suspect bot usage in the beta’s matches, there’s a chance Activision messed with the data. Whatever the outcome, Call of Duty Mobile will no doubt still hold a lot of gameplay for its fans. Even if this Beta didn’t directly impact Mobile‘s gameplay, at least it gave players a sweet new skin.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is scheduled for release on November 13th for the PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
