Combat improvements have been one of the most noticeable changes from Fallout 3 to Fallout 4. While Fallout: New Vegas did add iron sights and weapon mods to the franchise, Fallout 4 doubled-down on these elements while also sprucing up the enemy roster.
As a result, some encounters in Fallout 4 are a nightmare to complete. Players will need to utilize weapon mods, stealth, and power armor if they want to get through some of the game’s toughest fights. Ranging from giant Mirelurks to a Gunner stronghold, here are the ten toughest encounters players will ever face in Fallout 4.
10 Sarge
Part of the Minutemen questline involves players retaking the Castle, their original headquarters that housed a massive armory. While the Mirelurk Queen fight is certainly tough, there is arguably a tougher foe that waits below.
Once players meet Ronnie Shaw and begin the “Old Guns” quest, they will eventually come across a rogue Assaultron named Sarge. This level 30 robot has chainguns, a tough melee attack, and will quickly corner the player if they aren’t careful. Since the arena is so small, Sarge can be a much tougher fight than one would expect. Sneak attacks and traps work best in this fight.
9 Swan
Next to the Boston Commons is Swan’s Pond. This unsuspecting body of water appears to bear little significance at first until players walk next to the pond and encounter a unique Super Mutant Behemoth named Swan, who will rise from the pond when provoked. This enemy has 1,000 HP, solid damage resistance thanks to his makeshift armor, and can easily one-shot lower-level players in melee combat. He’s likely obliterated many an unsuspecting player.
8 Massachusetts State House Mirelurk Queen
Mirelurk Queens are exceedingly rare foes in Fallout 4, typically reserved as final fights in a handful of locations. One area players can fight this large creature is the Massachusetts State House.
Most of this dungeon is easy since it is inhabited by only a few normal Mirelurk foes. Once players reach the basement, however, things get much worse. The end of the dungeon will reveal a Mirelurk Queen in a small arena with little space to maneuver. Her acid attacks and melee attacks are much more deadly here.
7 Vault 114
During the “Unlikely Valentine” main quest, players will discover that one of Diamond City’s detectives, Nick Valentine, has been held captive at Vault 114. This Vault is filled with mobsters that have an infinite supply of ammunition for their submachine guns and .44 pistols. Despite their attire, these enemies can take a significant amount of punishment as well.
Dozens of these enemies patrol the Vault and await outside. Lower-level characters on a high difficulty setting will get killed on-sight if more than a couple of Triggermen spot the player. Besides stealth, charging in with a suit of power armor is one of the better options for rescuing Valentine from this large gang of mobsters.
6 Quincy Ruins
Some Fallout 4 players might be surprised to see Quincy be mentioned, but this location is a true terror for low-level characters. The Minutemen made a final stand at Qunicy before they were wiped out. After visiting the place, it’s easy to see why.
Gunners patrol every rooftop that overlooks the small town. Besides their notorious firepower, a unique Gunner named Tessa will charge the player in power armor before delivering a deadly melee attack with her unique weapon, Tessa’s Fist. Should Tessa be unable to punch the player, one of the Gunners will use a Fat Man to nuke the player into oblivion. Entering this area under-leveled on Very Hard or Survival is suicide.
5 35 Court
West of Custom House Tower is a unique, unmarked location named 35 Court. This building is notorious for ending many hardcore Survival runs due to the number of gun turrets and Gunners that patrol the area. Once players are inside, they will need to make their way to an elevator that is guarded by a Protectron and various turrets.
Once up the tower, players can find a leveled power armor suit in a container. Trying to open the container will cause an Assaultron and Sentry Bot to attack the player simultaneously. Each enemy is tough on their own, but fighting both together can be a swift death. Defeating both will allow players to take the power armor inside.
4 Mythic Deathclaws
Mythic Deathclaws are one of the toughest creatures players can face in Fallout 4. They are meant to spawn at level 75 and scale with the player infinitely, but these creatures have been seen near the Starlight Drive-In as early as level 24.
Not only do these Deathclaws have 1,360 health at level 75, but they also have 300 damage resistance and 400 energy resistance. Few enemies come close to that level of damage resistance, and fighting one of these things is a terror, let alone fighting a group of them at once. Stay away from the Glowing Sea to avoid fighting multiple of these things.
3 Venomous Anglers
Similar to Mythic Deathclaws, Venomous Anglers are the toughest non-Legendary variant of the Angler enemy. Only seen in Far Habor, these enemies pack a serious punch. Acid attacks and fireballs make these enemies a terror at medium to long-range, but their claws make for a formidable close-range weapon.
While their damage resistance is somewhat low at 125, their energy resistance is much higher at 230. The Venomous Angler’s damage output is so high that it can consistently kill Mythic Deathclaws with its ranged attacks. Do not underestimate these enemies.
2 Gunners Plaza
Take everything that makes Quincy Ruins tough and take the fight indoors, that is what Gunners Plaza is. The entire building is controlled by dozens of Gunners soldiers that have great armor and weapons.
Just getting into Gunner’s Plaza is a journey. Besides the enemies that patrol outside, a Fat Man-wielding Gunner can be found on the roof of the complex. Once every enemy is dealt with, walking inside will ensure a chaotic gunfight that can last upwards of a few hours on Survival difficulty. Do not enter this area unprepared!
1 Enraged Fog Crawler
Enraged Fog Crawlers are by far the toughest non-Legendary opponent in Fallout 4. They scale with the player, have 2,200 base HP, and are nigh-immune to ballistic weapons thanks to their 4,000 damage resistance. Immunity to radiation and poison also prevents players from weakening this enemy, meaning the only means of killing an Enraged Fog Crawler is through energy weapons.
Don’t expect it to stand still, though; this enemy moves surprisingly quick for its size. Should it close the gap, prepare to take a whopping 140 damage per melee attack. These enemies make Mythic Deathclaws appear trivial in comparison. Do not fight one of these enemies unless you’re totally confident in your success.
