Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland is re-teaming with Sony for the studio’s feature film adaptation of Uncharted. Now, Holland has taken to his official Twitter account to share the first official photo of himself in full costume as Nathan Drake, the lead hero of the video game franchise.
The main series of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted video games follow the adventures of Nathan Drake, a globe-trotting treasure hunter whom players control as they attempt to uncover various historical mysteries. Voiced by Nolan North, the character was partly inspired by the adventurer heroes of past pulp magazines, novels, and films, drawing comparisons to contemporary fictional explorers such as Indiana Jones and Lara Croft.
Sony’s Uncharted film will serve as a prequel to the video game series, with Holland portraying a younger version of Drake. A recent behind-the-scenes photo shared by Naughty Dog offered fans a glimpse at Holland on the set of Uncharted alongside North. In response to the photo, Holland asked his followers if they thought Sony would be angry with him if he uploaded a first look image of his Drake, noting that he couldn’t be fired on account of receiving North’s approval. Shortly after, Holland shared the official image of himself as Drake across his social media accounts, giving fans a preview of the explorer in full costume as he stands among ruins in an unknown location.
Holland will be joined by Mark Wahlberg in the role of Victor Sullivan, a fellow treasure hunter who serves as a partner and mentor to Drake in the video games. The Mask of Zorro star Antonio Banderas will also appear in an undisclosed role, though the actor had to temporarily leave the production after testing positive for COVID-19. The pandemic had previously resulted in filming being suspended shortly after starting in March, though production was able to resume in summer 2020 with proper protocols in place to ensure the safety of cast and crew.
During a conversation with a fan, while live-streaming on Instagram, Holland noted that the experience of working on Uncharted has lived up to his expectations. Once he completes work on the film, Holland will return to the role of Peter Parker in Marvel Studios and Sony’s third Spider-Man film.
Getting the Uncharted film off the ground has not been an easy task, as multiple directors and writers have been involved in the project before Ruben Fleischer signed on to helm the adaptation. Consequently, the film has been slated for release and then delayed on several occasions, even before the pandemic impacted the filming schedule.
Uncharted is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 16, 2021.
