Red Dead Online Players Disappointed by Halloween Event Compared to GTA

Fans of Red Dead Online have not been quiet about the lack of content updates for the video game Western, and often point out the extensive support given to the far older (but more profitable) GTA Online. Another comparison has been made between the games, this time pointing out the major differences in Halloween-themed events for GTA Online and Red Dead Online.

For fans not satisfied with posting clips of buggy revolvers or misbehaving horses in Red Dead Online, the wait for new significant content has been long. Many fans looked to Halloween as a time of relief for content-starved cowboys and criminals playing the mode, with some expecting Undead Nightmare content to drop in the back half of October. A Halloween update did come, though it has not been pleasing many fans.

While zombies were added to Red Dead Online, this addition has not been the smoothest. Reddit user s_42 touches on this issue and many others with a post in r/RedDeadOnline, calling out Rockstar for what players have viewed as a lacking update. S_42 said “no skins for wagons or horses” were added, with “no costumes, special cosmetics or weapons” coming to the game either. With the update only adding “a knife, rifle skin, recycled masks, and a bugged zombie mode,” the player ends the post calling Rockstar lazy.

Perhaps the most interesting point in the Halloween content breakdown is s_42’s mention of GTA “getting more monthly content that RDO gets in a year.” While GTA Online players have also had issues with the game recently, as Rockstar seems to have forgotten GTA Online’s anniversary, it is hard to deny the disparity between content drops for the two online offerings. The image attached to the post fits their complaints, as it features a tricked-out Halloween motorcycle compared to a sad-looking horse.

One user in the comments echoes a sentiment held by many Red Dead players, stating that “Gtao is the money maker and rdo isn’t.” While this statement is indisputable given the success of GTA Online, one commenter offers a counterpoint to the argument. Archonath says, “But do you know what would be a money maker… Undead Nightmare 2,” bringing up a much-requested story expansion as a point in favor of more Red Dead content. With Rockstar seemingly not budging, however, fans may want to lay their Undead Nightmare 2 dreams to rest.

It will be interesting to see if Rockstar acknowledges complaints and provides more consistent updates for the game going forward. If it does not, fans may keep dressing up as clowns in Red Dead Online to protest its slow content drops.

Red Dead Online is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
