Star Wars Squadrons: 10 Tips & Tricks For Winning Dogfights

Taking aerial combat to new heights, Star Wars: Squadrons takes a lot of player’s favorite parts of previous titles and made it the main focus. Flying through space in a starfighter while taking down the enemy, does it get any better? However, FPS skills just won’t cut it when the battle is taken to orbit. Some serious maneuvers and ship control is necessary, requiring some major practice time.

This becomes apparent when players start getting into team dogfights, ships zooming past while laser cannons fly towards the screen. Pilots will have to lean on an array of skills to get them through the battles in one piece, needing knowledge of every aspect. Luckily, the first players have bitten the bullet and delivered some vital information to newcomers, dropping hints and providing a blueprint to victory.

10 Drift Control

As soon as the players begin the game they’ll probably figure out the basic drift, throwing off basic enemies and making it harder to predict movement.

The micro drift happens when drifts are chained together, boosting mid-drift and forcing the ship into a tight turn. This is essential for high-level maneuvers and evading the more advanced end of the online community.

9 Shunt Power Efficiently

One of the more unique aspects of Squadron’s battle mechanics is the need to manage the ship’s power, shifting resources to where they’re most needed.

Moving it from the engine to weapons while engaged in combat, players can ensure they’ll never be left shooting blanks. Then when the chase ensues, move it to the engines to make a quick getaway.

8 Zig Zag! Don’t Move Straight

One of the oldest tricks in the book, keeping off the centerline will make tracking the player’s ship much harder. Straight lines are the predictable enemy, especially when the ping system is incorporated on the opponent’s side.

Even when the player is doing the chasing, unpredictable movements can confuse the enemy and block off the usual routes for escape. Seemingly obvious, it’s shocking how many ships are flying as straight as an arrow.

7 Sticking Together with Squadron

One of the biggest mistakes that individuals make is roaming away from the team too early in the game, it makes even the MVP very vulnerable to roaming groups.

The more coordination the better, providing backup in tight situations and picking off stragglers in the opposition. Once they’ve been beaten down, then explore a little and engage in 1V1 combat.

6 Foot Off The Gas

Flying around in Squadrons is nothing like high-speed track racing, do not accelerate into the corners. Knowing when to take the foot off the power or retreat is a key skill in fast turns and survival.

At the apex of a turn, it’s best to kick it into half throttle and boost out once it’s completed. It will throw off opponents in a chase and make the ship as energy-efficient as possible.

5 Ping The Enemy

An important aspect of the team, pinging enemies effectively is key to letting others know when trouble is brewing. Enemies on the tail? Ping teammates. Looking for that lone superstar on the opposing team? Ping teammates. It’s a flawless system.

It can also get someone out of an ambush, drawing the squad in for back up when the dogfight isn’t going so well. Communication is key and without a mic, the ping system is king.

4 Customize Ship Parts For Playstyle

All important aspects of a ship can be custom designed for the player, putting more emphasis on the kind of playstyle in use. If being in the thick of it sounds fun, upgrade the shields and weaponry.

More mobile players will also find this handy, taking off all that heavy artillery and swapping it out for some lightweight wings. Not everyone plays the same so why should the ships?

3 Don’t Get Too Attached To The Ship

Often players will fall into a ship fairly early on, growing attached and locked into a certain battle style. With an array of choices, the experienced player will know when it’s time to hang up a particular set of wings.

It will also improve the player’s skills by forcing them to improve in other areas. Every ship is different and finding the right one is a necessity.

2 Targeting Wheel

With so many different styles of ships flying around, knowing each one’s unique set of weaknesses will help take them out much more quickly. Bring up the targeting wheel to zone in on specific chinks in the armor.

Coming in especially handy when the big boys start appearing, taking down a Star Destroyer is no easy task. With such a size discrepancy, knowing the soft spots makes the task much easier.

1 Aviator Control For Comfort

For Star Wars fans that aren’t too accustomed to aerial combat, the individual pitch and roll sticks might be too complex until later days. Changing it to aviator controls will simplify the process and let players focus on the battlefield.

While this is tempting to stick with, the individual controls do allow for a little more direct control with practice. Testing it out in missions or against the AI will greatly benefit any gameplay going forward.
