Apex Legends’ expansion to new platforms beyond Origin, PS4, and Xbox One will begin soon. Fans have known for months that Apex is set to come to Steam and the Nintendo Switch, and today, Respawn Entertainment finally announced exactly when the game will be making the jump. Sadly, only one of these versions will be meeting the original fall 2020 release window.
On the official Apex website, game director Chad Grenier provided an update on the situation with the Steam and Switch versions, and in doing so, he confirmed that the Steam version will launch when Season 7 starts on November 4. This makes for the first official acknowledgement of Season 7’s new start date after it was leaked this week. Additionally, Grenier said that progression will carry over between Origin and Steam, so longtime PC players will be able to migrate without hassle if they want.
As for the Switch version of Apex Legends, it has been moved back to sometime next year. Grenier assured that Respawn is still hard at work on the port, but said that “this year has brought on unexpected new challenges, to put it mildly, and we don’t want to rush anything out.” He went on to state that the development team needs more time to “do justice to the game and make it into the great experience Switch players deserve.”
Fans are no doubt going to be disappointed to see the Switch port added to the growing list of games that have been delayed to 2021 due to 2020’s ongoing global pandemic. But on the plus side, Grenier stressed that Apex on Switch will be a fully-featured port, complete with all of the new and seasonal content found in the other versions on top of cross-play support. “We can’t wait to get Apex Legends into your hands (or your TV-connected dock) on Switch,” he said. “See you soon, and thanks for understanding.”
In the meantime, Season 6 continues to offer players glimpses at where Apex is heading. Throughout the last few weeks, Respawn has teased Season 7’s new character, Horizon, through in-game challenges and cryptic videos. How this will affect the game remains to be seen, since Horizon’s skillset has yet to be revealed, but with Season 7 less than two weeks away, players won’t have to wait long to find out.
Although the new season and ports won’t start arriving until next month, players can get their new content fix with Apex’s Fight or Fright Halloween event. This year’s version started yesterday and added the Shadow Royale LTM to the game, which iterates on last year’s Shadowfall mode by giving fallen players new abilities like Titanfall-esque wall-running.
Apex Legends is free-to-play for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. A Switch version is slated to launch in 2021.
