Any time a new piece of hardware hits the market, consumers look for a way to customize their look. Some gamers may be satisfied applying decals to the new PlayStation 5 once they receive it in November, but others may want to have their Sony console in a color other than white. Third-party companies are already stepping up to offer a solution.
Online retailer PlateStation 5, which is in no way affiliated with Sony or PlayStation, was founded because of a simple desire to have a PS5 in matte black, the color sported by the previous four iterations of the console. In addition to black, PlateStation 5 is also offering four other colors: cherry red, indigo blue, green camo, and chromatic. All five plates are available for pre-order now, and will be shipped as quickly as possible to arrive at customers’ doorsteps in late November.
The faceplates are listed for $39.99 USD (€34,95), and the company offers free shipping worldwide. PlateStation 5’s shipping policy says customers should expect the faceplates to arrive 5 days after shipping. However, if unforeseen circumstances cause the shipment to be delayed, the company will offer a full refund if the product does not arrive after an additional two weeks (a total of 19 days after shipping).
Unfortunately, the retailer is not currently offering any means of customizing the PlayStation 5 DualSense controllers to match, so players who are dead-set on having all of their gaming hardware in cherry red or green camo will have to come up with a different solution to fully customize their PlayStation 5. Some retailers are already offering customized PS5 controllers, some of which would match the faceplates being offered by PlateStation 5.
Customers who pre-order one of the faceplates may want to take some time getting familiar with how a PS5 is put together, since potential damage incurred while removing the default faceplates may void Sony’s warranty. However, according to Yasuhiro Ootori, VP of the Mechanical Design Dept.’s Hardware Design Division, the face and backplates can be removed safely by the user by lifting the back corner and sliding upward.
These are not officially licensed PlayStation accessories, but they should be fully compatible with the PlayStation 5. PlateStation 5 says that it is 100% committed to making sure customers are happy, and each plate is hand-checked before being shipped. Customers who are not completely satisfied with their custom PS5 faceplates will have up to 10 days from the arrival date to request a full refund from the manufacturer via email.
The PlayStation 5 launches on November 12, 2020.
