There was a lot of hope pinned on Christopher Nolan’s ambitious blockbuster Tenet to significantly boost theatre takings during the current COVID-19 pandemic but ultimately it failed to perform as well as hoped for. AT&T CEO John Stankey admitted that its box office was underwhelming during a conference call with investors.
“I can’t tell you we walked away from the Tenet experience saying it was a home run,” said Stankey during the 3rd quarter earnings call. But he didn’t express regret with the decision adding, “We’re happy we did it.”
Looking to the future however, Stankey didn’t seem overly optimistic. “We’re still committed to putting some of the content we think is most important into a theatrical channel. [But we’re] not expecting to see a huge recovery in theatrical. We’re expecting it to continue to be choppy.”
Conspicuous by its absence was any mention of future releases going straight to their new streaming platform HBO Max following Disney’s lead releasing the live action remake of Mulan for purchase via Disney+. Currently WarnerMedia are weighing their options regarding future theatrical releases with Wonder Woman 1984 still pencilled in for a Dec 25th release but Stankey revealed that the studio’s considering “plan A, plan B and plan C” and will have to “make a game time decision on some of that.”
In more positive news however, Stankey also announced that 130 out of 180 projects forced to shutdown by the pandemic have resumed development or production. “We’re far enough along that the confidence level of employees is growing day by day that we can protect the safety of individuals and still get work done,” said Stankey. “We’re out of the woods at this point from being dead cold in the middle of the pandemic to where we feel we can get hours produced.”
