Spider-Man: Miles Morales Devs Discuss How the PS5 Optimizes the Game

Spider-Man: Miles Morales will offer its most definitive experience on the PlayStation 5. The game will launch on both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5, but according to Insomniac Games, players will get the most out of it on the next-generation console, which makes sense. The PlayStation 5 just offers more features and enhancements, and Insomniac developed Spider-Man: Miles Morales with these advantages in mind.

Insomniac Games discussed some of the ways the PlayStation 5 optimizes Miles Morales in an interview with Game Informer. While talking with the gaming magazine, Insomniac stated that on the PlayStation 5, Spider-Man: Miles Morales won’t have any loading screens, better graphical fidelity, better acting, more immersive combat, and much smoother action.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales‘ Creative Director (Brian Horton), Art Director (Gavin Golden), and Senior Animator (James Hamm), all gave detailed descriptions on how exactly these optimizations will affect the game. Here’s a brief rundown of all of them:

  • No Loading Screens: As the name suggests, the game will have no loading screens. The way Horton describes it, situations that would normally require a loading screen, such as the player dying or fast-traveling, will just cause the game to fade out and in, so players just keep playing.
  • Better Graphics: Both Horton and Golden emphasize how ray-tracing will facilitate better graphics. Players will see reflections everywhere in the game, such as under ice and snow, wet streets, and even on car surfaces. Miles Morales will also just have a more detailed city, characters, and particle system to work with on the PS5.
  • Higher-quality Acting: Golden states that the PlayStation 5 allows for better motion capture, which Insomniac used to create improved 4D scans of their characters, something it couldn’t do on the PS4.
  • Smoother Action: Spider-Man: Miles Morales will have an optional Performance Mode feature that will allow it to run at 60fps. So the animations of the game will be a lot smoother than before.
  • More Immersive Combat: The PS5’s new DualSense controller features adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, allowing Insomniac to let players feel what it’s like to web-swing and use Miles’ Venom Blasts.

However, despite all of these advantages, Insomniac claims that the gameplay experience of the PS4 version of Miles Morales should be equal to the PS5 version. This statement is hard to believe, but still possible considering it’s all up to user preference in the end. Players will be able to decide for themselves if Insomniac is right when November 12 arrives.
