The PlayStation 4 port for Night Call has been canceled by developers Black Muffin and Monkey Moon. The announcement of its cancellation was made on the game’s official Twitter account.
Night Call had been released on other platforms prior to the PS4 port’s cancellation, including both the Nintendo Switch and the Xbox One. However, its PS4 version was abruptly canceled due to poor sales and conflicts between the game’s original developers and those behind the game’s port.
The game’s official Twitter account posted an announcement on Saturday, which also stated that the developer was as “disappointed” as PS4 owners might be. The developer concluded by saying it “just can’t afford it.”
Night Call‘s demise on the PS4 comes hot on the heels of the cancellation of the PS4 port of Uppers, a beat-em-up title released on PC. While neither were necessarily high-profile games, their respective cancellations are likely to cause an upset among select PS4 owners awaiting more PS4 content before Sony’s PlayStation 5 launches this holiday season.
Although Sony has been capitalizing on PS5 titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Sony did reveal the PlayStation Indies initiative in a blog post in July. It was announced with nine new indie games on both the PS4 and PS5, including Worms Rumble, Haven, Maquette, and Recompile.
With the PS4 still supported by initiatives like this, PS4 owners will still have new content well into the PS5’s life cycle, despite canceled games like Night Call. It remains to be seen when the PS5 will fully eclipse the PS4, with the PS5 supporting over 4,000 PS4 games via backward compatibility. However, Sony will still be supporting the PS4 for the meantime.
Night Call is currently available on Nintendo Switch, PC, and Xbox One.
