Nvidia to Have More RTX 3070 Supply At Launch Than With RTX 3080

After what many referred to as a “shambles” of a launch for the flagship RTX 3080, PC gamers have been hoping that Nvidia will do a better job with the upcoming launch of its more mainstream RTX 3070 graphics card. The latest reports from retailers in the Asia Pacific region suggests that supplies will indeed be stronger, if not as sufficient as many had hoped.

The information comes from Japanese site PC Watch, who spoke to a number of retailers in the technology hub area of Akihabara in Tokyo. With multiple shops stating that their supply of Nvidia RTX 3070 cards will be considerably larger than that of the RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 at launch. Exact numbers have not been revealed by the Japanese retailers, but there are indications available elsewhere.

European retailer Proshop is reporting at the time of writing that 16% of its RTX 3070 orders have either been received, or have been allocated for shipping by Nvidia or its hardware partners. While only a small percentage of the ordered stock, it is still notably higher than the supplies of the RTX 3080, which still sit just below 10% of ordered units, despite its launch being more than a month ago.

Nvidia certainly appears to be learning from the disastrous RTX 3080 launch, delaying the RTX 3070 to ensure better stock supplies. New rumors have also suggested it will be looking to utilize imperfect GA102 chips from the RTX 3080 and 3090 production process in the upcoming RTX 3070 Ti, rather than the GA104 used in the RTX 3070, as well as faster GDDR6X memory. If accurate, it means the RTX 3070 may not be quite as good value as it currently appears performance wise.

While it would be almost impossible for Nvidia not to surpass the launch stock of the RTX 3090 and RTX 3080, the positive statements suggest that far more gamers are likely to be able to get their hands on one at launch, even if supply delays are likely to continue into 2021. It appears that Nvidia were right to delay the launch of the card in order to ensure a better stock situation, which will hopefully reduce the number of scalpers too.

Being a more mainstream card though, it is likely that demand for the RTX 3070 will be even greater than for the flagship RTX 3080. Although AMDs Big Navi and RX 6000 Series announcement the day beforehand may persuade some gamers to wait, especially if the excellent leaked RX 6800 XT performance figures turn out to be accurate.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 launches on October 29.
