Halloween is right around the corner and that means it is time for Mega Gengar to takeover the Mega Raid slot in Pokemon GO. Fans of the mobile AR game should now have seen the spooky Mega Evolution replace Mega Venusaur, which means there is a brand new Mega Evolution to obtain and lots of new Mega Energy to collect.
The primary way for players to grind their way to a Mega Gengar evolution of their own is going to be defeating the Mega Pokemon in Battle Raids. To do this, obviously Pokemon GO trainers are going to need to team up with a handful of friends and assemble a counter guide that is designed to exploit Mega Gengar’s weaknesses.
Mega Gengar is most vulnerable to Dark-, Psychic-, Ghost-, and Ground- types. Luckily, that means that veteran PvE Battle Raiders should already have a lot of the top counters already powered up and ready to go. Now it is just a matter of assembling the right team for the job. High level players should be able to takedown Mega Gengar with 3-5 experienced players.
The counter list does include a few Mega Evolutions, but keep in mind that there are plenty of regular Legendary options that don’t require burning through Mega resources if players don’t have enough saved up or just want to horde them a bit longer. Mega Pokemon will help increase DPS during the big fight, but they aren’t necessary for success during these raids.
Gengar (Mega) – Lick/Shadow Ball
Mewtwo – Psycho Cut/Psystrike
Houndoom (Mega) – Snarl/Foul Play
Giratina (Origin) – Shadow Claw/Shadow Ball
Darkrai – Snarl/Dark Pulse
Landorus – Mud Shot/Earth Power
Metagross – Zen Headbutt/Psychic
Excadrill – Mud Slap/Drill Run
Espeon – Confusion/Psychic
Groudon – Mud Shot/Earthquake
Obviously there are lots of other acceptable counters out there, but players who want to power through these Mega Raids without any problems would have the best luck if they used the options presented here. Remember to take a close look at each Pokemon’s moveset and current power level before adding them to the counter roster. It may be necessary to burn through some TMs, Stardust, and Candy in order to properly prepare each counter for the big fight ahead.
For now, Pokemon GO trainers should be able to head out into the world (or play from home) and continue catching the best Unova Pokemon in the game and getting closer to that complete Pokedex. Check back for more Pokemon GO updates closer to the event. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!
Pokemon GO is available now in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
