PS5 SSD Storage Expansion Price Leaked by Walmart | Game Rant

Both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles will be out in just a matter of weeks, and so retail stores are starting to prepare. Retailers all over the world have started making shelf space for not just the next-generation consoles, but their controllers, games, and other accessories as well. And now thanks to Walmart preparing its shelves for the PlayStation 5 launch, we may now know exactly how much it will cost to expand the console’s storage.

An image has been circulating online of what appears to be a price listing for a 500 GB PlayStation 5 SSD drive that players could use to expand their console’s storage. Assuming the image isn’t fake or inaccurate, players can expect to spend $115 for 500 GB of additional PS5 SSD storage space. Official pricing information hasn’t been announced at the time of this writing, but this price point makes sense.

While PlayStation has yet to reveal how much fans will have to pay to expand the PS5 SSD storage, it seems that the 1 TB Xbox Series X storage expansion card will cost $219.99. Since 500 GB is half of 1 TB, the $115 price point for PS5 storage expansion is easy to believe.

It remains to be seen what PS5 SSD drive expansions will be available to players at launch, but 500 GB doesn’t seem like a very significant upgrade. The PS5 comes with a 1 TB SSD out of the box, but early reports indicate that a good portion of that space is dedicated to the console’s operating system, and so in actuality, players will have a lot less space to work with than expected. And with video game install sizes continuously increasing, it seems as though players may want to shell out for a more significant storage expansion upgrade, if available.

Video game install sizes are a big concern for the next-generation, as some file sizes have ballooned to well over 200 GB. Perhaps the most infamous example is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare‘s file size, which is north of 250 GB at the time of this writing. If Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has a similar file size as Modern Warfare, that means Call of Duty fans on PS5 would have to dedicate about half of their SSD storage expansion space just for one game.

As the generation continues, it’s quite likely that possible PS5 hardware revisions will give players more SSD space to start with, and that retailers will start selling larger SSD storage expansion upgrades. At launch, though, players may want to prepare themselves for having to delete and re-install games repeatedly.
