With the upcoming Diablo IV, many fans have the need to satiate their hunger for something similar, but the old games just don’t cut it. There’s many videogames, old and new alike, that share many similarities with the Diablo franchise, and they are just the replacement you’re looking for.

Updated March 22, 2021 by Michael Llewellyn: Diablo is beginning to gain steam once again in the gaming world thanks to Blizzard unveiling a remaster of the ever-popular Diablo 2. With Diablo 4 somewhere on the horizon, gamers are more hyped than ever to get back into the ARPG world. Thankfully, there are quite a few other games to help players bridge the gaps while they wait. Because of this, we’ve updated this list to include a handful of extra titles to give players an even wider selection of Diablo-like adventures.

14 Hades

Released in 2020 for the PC and the Nintendo Switch, Hades is a rogue-like action RPG with enough hack-and-slash mechanics that will appeal to fans of the Diablo series. Hades is set in the Ancient Greek underworld and features an excellent Saturday morning cartoon show art style.

The Rogue-like nature sets Hades apart from action RPGs like Diablo in terms of progression but the top-down hack-and-slash nature at the very core of the game will still appeal to fans. Furthermore, fighting one’s way through randomly generation dungeons and trying to get out of hell is the entire basis for both games and there’s enough to please fans of both genres.

13 Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3

A superhero game may seem like a strange recommendation for fans of the Diablo series but the core gameplay mechanics and co-operative gameplay both locally and online makes it a great starting point. It’s a more simplistic Diablo-like experience for younger players that may have a shorter attention span and it also serves as a great entry point for gamers new to the genre.

It’s also interesting to note that it’s a much better Marvel video game experience than the big-budget Marvel’s Avengers on the PS4 and Xbox One. It has a huge selection of characters and is a lot of fun for gamers of all skill sets.

12 Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance Series

Unlike the mainline Baldur’s Gate RPG series that originated on the PC, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance are dungeon crawling action-RPGs that feature co-operative gameplay and a top-down view similar to that of the Diablo series.

Being designed for PlayStation 2 and the original Xbox, the Dark Alliance games are much less complicated than their CRPG counterparts but serve as a great introduction to the Dungeons & Dragons universe. A brand new Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance is set to arrive on consoles and the PC in the Summer of 2021 bringing its familiar co-op hack-and-slash gameplay mechanics to modern audiences.

11 Darksiders: Genesis

Serving as a spin-off and a prequel to the original Darksiders titles which were fully 3D action-adventure games. The series has always borrowed elements from other games and genres like The Legend of Zelda and Portal series but this title is more in line with the Diablo series.

Additionally, Darksiders: Genesis uses familiar elements like puzzle solving and explorations and blends this with Diablo-like progression mechanics and combat. It’s also worth noting that it’s a much better game than the disappointing Darksiders 3 and does a great job of expanding an already interesting and imaginative universe.

10 Vikings – Wolves of Midgard

Vikings is a game developed by Games Farm and published by Kalypso Media Digital in 2017, but it still holds up to what one could want from an Action RPG. The game has you explore the mythical land of Midgard, a region inspired by Norse legends.

Earn blessings from different Norse gods and bludgeon your enemies with hammers as you progress through the land. There are many monsters and undead for you to defeat, and you can invite some friends to play with you in co-op mode. Plus, this game has interesting lore for you to discover, and humorous cutscenes every now and then.

9 Warhammer: Chaosbane

This title has us again exploring the Warhammer universe. In this game, you may choose from five different classes to take on hordes upon hordes of enemies coming straight to get you, as well as team up with up to three of your friends. The character customization will also make it interesting from the start.

This beautiful action RPG implements almost puzzle-like mechanics to the fights, having you figure out the weaknesses of bosses in intricate and interesting ways. The campaign is riveting and the story is easy to follow, even if you’re not very knowledgeable about Warhammer‘s vast universe.

8 Chronicon

Chronicon, released this year, puts you in a game where all evil has been vanquished. So… what is there to do? Utilize the artifact known as the Chronicon, a strange magical device that lets you relive the experiences and exploits of various heroes that have fallen in battle.

With virtually infinite character progression, four unique classes, and five different storylines, this is a must-have for die-hard Diablo fans. With charming pixel graphics and stunning visual effects, this game will drag you in as soon as you boot it up. It’s hard to believe that it was made by only one person.

7 The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing: Final Cut

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing has you play as the legendary vampire hunter, choosing from six classes to play to slay monsters all around the world of Borgovia. The Final Cut is a collection of the three previous games by the developer, told as a single story.

With over fifty hours of gameplay and an enormous variety of skills, this game will impress even the most experienced veterans of action RPGs. A feature that is very appreciated by the players is Lady Katarina, your ghostly companion. She helps you in several ways and is also very witty and charismatic. Definitely won’t get bored with her around.

6 Victor Vran ARPG

Another game letting you play as an epic monster slayer that hunts supernatural beings. In this ARPG, you’ll never get tired of blasting away skeletons, zombies, and ghouls with the gigantic arsenal at your disposal. The weapons, armor, and spells your character uses are entirely chosen by you and give you several different buffs.

The great graphics and interesting mechanics will pique the interest of any old-school Diablo fan and will remind them of the fun they had with the Diablo series. The storyline is a bit bland but is best enjoyed with friends to help you on your quest to vanquish evil fiends from the world.

5 Titan Quest Anniversary Edition

An overhaul of the 2006 classic, Titan Quest Anniversary Edition revamps many of the features that improve the quality of life of the players, as well as making the graphics better and making the Titan Quest experience much more enjoyable. This improved version will have you hooked in no time.

This ARPG has you explore the Ancient World, full of mythological beasts and legendary locations, such as the Great Pyramids, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and many more. There are over a thousand pieces of equipment to collect and customize your character with, so you won’t be getting bored any time soon.

4 Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem

This game is a very different, innovative ARPG that uses creative controls and stylish visuals to make a game that’s worth every penny. It has you think strategically for fights and choose your every move very carefully, or else you may be in lots of trouble.

As a long-term game, Wolcen is still getting updates every week and has regular content added to it every now and then. The storyline is also quite long, so it’ll keep you playing for a long while. Sadly, the servers are a bit laggy, but overall this is a fantastic and enjoyable ARPG.

3 Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr

With another perspective on the Warhammer universe, Inquisitor – Martyr brings us to the 41st Millenium. You take control of an inquisitor and choose from three different classes to wreak havoc upon heretics and destroy corruption everywhere you go.

This futuristic action RPG has many features, such as crafting your own gear, as well as expansive skill trees and various abilities. The game is still getting free, consistent updates with great content every now and then, so you’ll be able to join in on the fun whenever you like.

2 Torchlight II

The Torchlight games have always been a known alternative to the Diablo series, because of how many similarities they share. Torchlight II does not has anything to envy from Diablo, and is only worth twenty dollars on Steam. It has full mod support, so despite being released in 2012, it still has replayability to spare.

This dungeon crawling masterpiece is an excellent example of what an ARPG should look like, and many creators have taken inspiration from it and Diablo alike. The community is bustling with ideas and inspiration to make the game even more enjoyable.

1 Path of Exile 2

Path of Exile 2 is a true classic when it comes to ARPGs. Without a doubt the best replacement for Diablo, it will easily become addictive and will drive players to keep playing hours upon hours of epic fighting and grinding. With a whopping 19 classes to choose from, this game has a lot of content to offer.

All in all, Path of Exile 2 is an excellent game that should be played by all veterans of Action RPGs, but this doesn’t mean new players can’t get into it. Everyone that plays is bound to find a great time and a riveting new experience to enjoy.
