Announced all the way back in May 2012, Cyberpunk 2077 is setting itself up to be one of the most ambitious open-world games ever made. Due to the long development period between announcement and release, it is understandable that some of the original concepts pitched for Cyberpunk 2077, such as the game’s standalone multiplayer mode, will not be available for the game’s launch. This has caused developer CD Projekt Red some trouble however, as some of the game’s mechanics, such as wall-running and dual wielding, have been scrapped altogether. Thankfully, the developer has a response to those worried about the game’s cut content at launch.
Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most anticipated RPGs in recent years, with the game’s developer, CD Projekt Red’s previous title, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, winning over 800 awards including multiple “Game of the Year” awards. With the game’s first gameplay demonstration being showcased publicly in August 2018, Cyberpunk 2077 has changed quite a bit approaching its November 2020 release.
Addressing fans’ concerns over cut content, CDPR’s “MilezZx” commented on the community’s public Discord, stating “Of course we iterate and change stuff and of course we also will have ideas that sound great on paper but then doesn’t end up working out well in the game with all the other features. Witcher 3 we also cut a ton of stuff, but in the end all of it made the game better”
He continued, “Now I understand, this is disappointing for everyone when it happens and also difficult to understand without all the context of development environment, but in this case I just kindly ask you for your trust. Just look at stories of so many other games you might enjoy. Believe me when I say that during their development some loved features also were cut and you still enjoy them today, maybe even because of the cuts.”
MilezZx also commented on the amount of content present in Cyberpunk 2077, telling fans not to worry about the game being content light, “If you worry about the amount of content on our game, please don’t. We’re notoriously bad at judging how long gametime is in our games, so we try not to do that anymore. But I can only keep saying what I have been saying in the past: you guys have seen nothing yet.”
What CD Projekt Red is describing is the ever-increasing consequence in publicly announcing games far before the teams have any concrete footage to showcase what the game’s idea is. This is because the gaming community can be very quick to jump to calling out cut content, altered visuals, and unrepresented features, despite the fact that there may be important developmental reasons for their inclusion or exclusion. The idea game’s mechanics and gameplay designs being restructured mid-development is something the gaming community will either have to grow accustomed to, as games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Starfield, and Fable are being announced very early into development.
Cyberpunk 2077 will release on Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 19th 2020.
