October 22 brought the return of the annual Halloween update to Grand Theft Auto Online, and with it various new cars, cosmetics, and limited-time game modes featuring triple cash and RP payouts. Unexpectedly, this recent update has also seen the return of the hallucination inducing peyote plants that crafty players are discovering can be used to generate lots of RP utilizing an exploit, thus skipping past much of GTA Online‘s content grinding.
While presumably added as a fun diversion to experience in-between traveling from mission to mission, the seasonally available peyote plants have a deliberately unclear explanation from Rockstar as to what their purpose is. Mechanically, should a player interact with one, they are transformed into a random animal as part of a hallucination-type activity, the end of the ordeal awarding the player with an amount of RP.
While no stranger to odd exploits and the occasional hacker over its seven year lifespan, GTA Online manages to keep its moderator team busy with the game’s rapid pace of updates and support. The peyote exploit is actually one of the easier to perform, its simplicity making it such an attractive avenue for players in need of a quick experience boost. The entire process utilizes a solo-lobby away from disruptive players and the player setting their spawn point near one of the peyote plants. Similar to other cutscenes, the player can skip playing through the hallucination, though the RP reward is still granted to them.
By leaving the lobby and restarting it again, the spawns of the plants are refreshed, meaning the player is able to complete a series of hallucinations at a fraction of the time by skipping the sequence and reloading to repeat the process and reap the RP rewards easily. While this proves to be one of GTA Online‘s more benign exploits, being able to be executed solo and not at the expense of other players, utilizing this method for leveling is still considered a bannable offense and should not be attempted by anyone wanting to err on the side of caution.
Despite not being a particularly fast method of leveling on its own, especially compared to the more lucrative garage money glitch, the peyote plant exploit’s ease of access and execution make it an enticing shortcut for the duration of the Halloween update. As Rockstar continues to support GTA Online, the game’s sheer volume of content will continue to engage its massive playerbase well into the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, even with the occasional glitchy update.
Grand Theft Auto Online is available on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, and will be released on PS5 and Xbox Series X in 2021.
