Sackboy: A Big Adventure Runs at 60 Frames Per Second on Both PS4 and PS5

While the PS5 is reportedly far more powerful than the current-generation PS4, there are still games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Sackboy: A Big Adventure that will release on both consoles. Sackboy: A Big Adventure is set in the world of LittleBigPlanet, but strays away from level creation in favor of strict platforming gameplay.

Pre-release trailers and screenshots for Sackboy: A Big Adventure paint the game in a gorgeous light, with vibrant colors and varied landscapes that the different levels take place in. Now, recent coverage via IGN reveals that developer Sumo Digital has confirmed Sackboy: A Big Adventure will run at 60 FPS on both PS4 and PS5 consoles.

Sackboy has come a long way since his arrival in Sony’s catalog of mascots in the early days of the PlayStation 3. Sackboy was first introduced in LittleBigPlanet, with the series having three mainline titles and a plethora of spin-offs. Sackboy: A Big Adventure for PS4 and PS5 could be seen as one of those spin-off titles, seeing as it is now a 3D action platformer in the style of games like Super Mario 3D World. Seeing as the game is all about tight platforming and action, Sumo Digital apparently made it a priority to make the gameplay experience as smooth as possible.

Recent coverage by way of IGN confirms tons of new information about Sackboy: A Big Adventure after speaking with Sumo Digital’s Design Director Ned Waterhouse. While speaking to IGN Waterhouse said, “We said from day one, the absolute must was a smooth 60 frames per second because we focused on play and that was about creating the best platform we could. For us, that meant awesome character controls, and it meant a really responsive character.” The trailers for Sackboy: A Big Adventure show off tons of methods of traversal and platforming, so having a tight experience for a game like this is top priority.

To achieve this consistent 60 FPS across both PS4 and PS5, Waterhouse says the team used “dynamic resolution scaling” to ensure the gameplay stays smooth regardless of what’s happening on-screen. While there are a handful of titles that support cross-generation PS4 and PS5 play most don’t offer the same graphical fidelity between versions. While it’s still a bit unclear whether or not A Big Adventure will have other graphical differences between versions, both versions will share a consistent frame rate.

In all likelihood, the PS5 version of Sackboy: A Big Adventure will have a bit of a graphical boost compared to the PS4 version, but the specifics of those potential differences remain to be seen. Seeing as the PS5’s hardware and internals are much more powerful than the PS4, it wouldn’t be too farfetched to assume there will be some graphical differences between versions. Still, regardless of the platform players choose to play on, Sackboy: A Big Adventure will run at a consistent 60 FPS.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure will launch on November 12 for PlayStation 5.
