Final Fantasy X is considered by many to be one of the best Final Fantasy games of all time, and it’s easy to see why this is the case once people play the game. The excellent story, a memorable cast of characters, amazing combat, and an intriguing setting are just a few of the many ways in which this game has struck a chord with the Final Fantasy fanbase, who still look back upon the game fondly to this day.
The combat in Final Fantasy X is definitely one of its crowning jewels, feeling faster and more intuitive than ever before. From having a clear idea of when your characters will have their turns to the ease of switching out party members whenever they want — there are a large number of ways in which Final Fantasy X streamlines the flow of combat to make it more accessible and enjoyable for the masses.
The Overdrives are certainly one of the best and most epic parts of the combat system, so let’s stop beating around the bush and rank the Overdrives of all the party members.
7 Lulu — Fury
Out of all the Final Fantasy X party members, Lulu easily has one of the worst Overdrives by a country mile. On paper, the idea of a multi-cast ability might sound great, but the fact of the matter is that the execution of this mechanic fails miserably.
The player needs to rotate the right stick to increase the number of times the spell will hit. Problem is that — unless Lulu’s magic stat is godlike — the rotations simply don’t register, for the most part, leading to a weak attack which lands maybe three or four times before fizzling out into obscurity.
6 Yuna — Grand Summon
Yuna’s Grand Summon might sound like a powerful Overdrive, but what it does is just summons an Aeon with a maxed-out Overdrive gauge. While this is certainly helpful, it’s not exactly unique or epic by any means.
This Overdrive does prove to be quite useful if Yuna decides to summon an Aeon whose Overdrive gauge is already close to getting maxed out since this will pretty much allow said Aeon to hit enemies twice with their Overdrive attack, landing two massive blows that will easily take care of most opponents with ease.
5 Kimahri — Ronso Rage
The Blue Magic ability makes a return in Final Fantasy X as well, this time in the form of Kimahri’s Ronso Rage ability. At a glance, this might seem like the weakest Overdrive in the entire game — after all, the idea that an entire Overdrive gauge needs to be depleted just for one attack seems like a complete waste of this ability.
However, one need only see the effects of powerful magic like Bad Breath and Mighty Guard to understand how effective this ability really is. With good timing, Kimahri can buff the entire party in one fell swoop and pretty much guarantee victory in any battle.
4 Auron — Bushido
Auron might be one of the coolest characters in any Final Fantasy game, but one can’t deny the fact that his Overdrive is nowhere near as great as what his character might make it out to be. While these abilities certainly deal a ton of damage, they do become moot by the time the end game rolls out, leading to Auron’s Overdrive being mostly forgotten in the grand scheme of things.
That being said, one can’t deny that Auron looks like the most badass character of all time when he conjures a tornado to suck up his opponents, which is subsequently followed up by a swath of flames as Auron ignites said tornado with his alcohol jug.
3 Rikku — Mix
Rikku’s Mix is easily one of the best abilities in the entire game, and a godsend for anyone who wants to speedrun the game. After all, Mix can do everything from killing off all enemies to buffing up the party so that they do 9999 damage with every hit.
With the correct application of this particular Overdrive, players can blast through the entire game with little to no issues, negating any challenge from the overall experience. That being said, it must be said that using Rikku’s Mix is a bit of a hassle for newcomers and looking through guides over and over again is anything but fun.
2 Wakka — Slots
Wakka might not exactly be the best character in Final Fantasy X — with some of his quirks being downright irritating at times — but there’s no denying the fact that his Slots Overdrive is definitely quite useful indeed. This is quite a surprise, given the fact that Slots have been some of the worst Limit Breaks in past Final Fantasy games.
However, while Aurochs Reels might be the last Reel that Wakka can unlock, the fact of the matter is that it’s completely useless due to the difficulty of nailing this attack and the relatively low damage it deals. Instead, it’s Attack Reels that prove to be one of the more powerful moves, and nailing the Reels to land 12 high-powered hits on enemies will never not be entertaining.
1 Tidus — Swordplay
Of course, it would be impossible to list out some of the best Overdrives in Final Fantasy X and not mention Tidus’ Swordplay, which can certainly dish out some immense damage if the player goes all out in their bid to maximize Tidus’ Strength.
Swordplay is the most powerful Overdrive in the entire game simply because of one move — Blitz Ace. While this move doesn’t really do all that damage when players get it for the first time, it’s when Tidus is buffed up and has max Strength that this ability truly shines, dealing 99999 damage with each hit if the set-up is perfect.
